This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 76%. (I'm a bot)
7 Min Read.BANGKOK - Chemicals giant Bayer and the U.S. government cooperated closely last year to lobby Thailand to reverse its ban on glyphosate, used in the company's controversial weedkiller Roundup, documents obtained by an environmental group and reviewed by Reuters show.
Thailand eventually dropped plans to ban glyphosate a few days before the ban was due to come into force in December 2019.
Thailand had initiated significant steps in August 2019 to ban glyphosate and other chemicals widely deemed toxic to humans.
The World Health Organization's cancer research arm classified glyphosate as "Probably carcinogenic to humans" in March 2015.As Thailand considered the ban on glyphosate, Bayer kicked off its lobbying effort.
A ban on glyphosate would have meant grain grown using it could not enter Thailand, denying U.S. exporters of bulk crops - including soybeans and wheat - access to a market that, like others in Southeast Asia, has grown massively from 2015 to nearly $1 billion in value in 2019, U.S. data shows.

  • Dave has results from the poll he put up before March 27. Out of 532 responses, 504 enjoyed Clash more, with only 20 liking Wrestlemania more, and 8 rating them roughly equally. 489 voted for Clash as having the better card, while 39 picked Wrestlemania’s card, and 4 thought the cards were equal in quality. Only two picked a Wrestlemania match for match of the night, with Ted DiBiase vs. Randy Savage and DiBiase vs. Don Muraco each getting a vote. FlaiSting got 245 votes for match of the night while Midnight Express/Fantastics got 242 votes, and the NWA tag title match got 36 votes.
  • Anyway, it’s a really slow news week. So with the complete lack of anything interesting happening, Dave is gonna hit us with a bunch of semi-organized thoughts and such.
  • Hulk Hogan and Sting are the two guys coming out of Sunday with the most buzz. The level of response Sting has been getting cements him as the #2 babyface in the country, jumping past Savage and the Road Warriors quite quickly. Sting’s a guy who never had a big push before a couple months ago, had never gotten a clean pin on a major star, he’s never even won a singles title in NWA. He’s good for his experience level, but he’s very unpolished, and he’s not a good talker. But the man has some kind of charisma and fans have latched onto it, and Sting/Flair is now the most viewed match in modern NWA history and potentially the most viewed match in U.S. cable tv history. Ric Flair deserves a lot of credit for the match turning out and for giving Sting the rub, but you can’t get over off a rub like that if you don’t have something to you. Unfortunately, they don’t have a lot of options for sustaining his push and keeping his momentum going. He’s worked Flair for four months now, and there’s no other heel he can have a meaningful feud with without cooling off. So Dave worries they’re going to whiff and fail to catch lightning in a bottle with Sting.
  • Wrestlemania’s numbers may be down, but ppv kept it from being a flop financially. Roughly 585,000 homes paid $19.95 to watch Wrestlemania IV, roughly a 6% buyrate (maybe as high as 6.5%), which means a gross of $11.7 million. With closed circuit, live gate, and the site fee Trump paid, the total take is an estimated $16.3 million, with WWF pocketing roughly $7 million. Merch may get them another million. We’ll see the real success or failure when WWF returns in a month, because they’re taking four weeks off. So we’ll have to see if it’s profitable to off-set other losses of income - house show revenue leading to Wrestlemania was down from the same period as last year, and the summer slump is coming.
  • Clash drew an overall 5.8 rating and 12.6 share, being viewed in 2,561,000 homes in an average quarter hour. It’s not quite Royal Rumble ratings, but interestingly the audience grew every quarter hour. You’d never see that in a modern Raw, that’ for sure. FlaiSting topped out at a 7.1 rating/15 share with 3,138,000 homes on average, with the final 15 minutes having just under 3.5 million watching. Quite possibly the most watched slot of wrestling ever on cable tv. No matter how you slice it (ratings services assume a household means 2.2 viewers, based on their averages). Dave figures for wrestling the number may be closer to 3 particularly for ppv, but no matter how you slice it Wrestlemania didn’t have near as many viewers as Clash.
  • Dave thinks there’s a criticism of Wrestlemania that isn’t really just: the card was too long. For what was billed (16-18 matches), it wasn’t too long, and the card only went 3 hours 40 minutes with a 12 minute intermission. Most matches were under 6 minutes, and cutting time would have made them even shorter. The card may not have been good, and it may seem long because of its badness, but any shorter and all the complaints would have been about the lack of wrestling.
  • For Clash, Dave thinks the criticism of there being too many commercials is a bad one. Seeing that quality a show for free? You can live with commercials and let the advertisers foot the bill. And they didn’t break any match up with commercials. Sure, the breaks were longer than usual, but they avoided cutting off the action so it’s all good.
  • For the most just criticisms of both shows, Dave thinks the Wrestlemania crowd and judging for FlaiSting take the cake. The crowd at Wrestlemania was papered with non-fans who didn’t know the characters and stories, and even WWF operates at a level of complexity above the ability to just grab a random off the street and expect them to grasp everything and react appropriately with no background knowledge. As for Clash, they botched the judging completely. Nobody clarified if a judges’ decision could cause a title change. Having one judge be a Penthouse Pet on Ric Flair’s arm the day before on tv strains credulity to the breaking point. They promised a winner and gave a draw. They never made clear that Jason Hervey and Ken Osmond weren’t actually judges and were just sitting at the judges’ table as celebrities. If Flair and Sting had been average or even bad, this judging stuff could have completely ruined the show in Dave’s opinion.
  • Dave thinks the best swerve related to either show happened the week before in Springfield, Illinois. Santana and Martel came out wearing the WWF tag titles for a match scheduled to air after Wrestlemania, which made Dave expect them to keep the belts. Turns out they got into it with Slick and chased him to the back, and the ring attendant brought the belts to the back, then they re-entered without the belts and the cameras didn’t start rolling until the second entrance. Clever work by WWF there.
  • Martel and Santana getting booed at Wrestlemania remains the most puzzling thing about the night for Dave. Even at the closed-circuit sites Dave got reports from, fans there booed them. At first Dave assumed it was because Demolition are kind of Road Warrior knockoffs, but reports Dave got indicate that they got booed a lot too, so Dave has no clue why fans aren’t feeling Strike Force.
  • WWF and NWA each have a candidate for “best case of assuming fans have memory loss” with their shows. WWF gets theirs for the evil twin Hebner angle. A few weeks back it was being hailed as a great angle, but once it became clear the tournament was flopping as an angle, they dropped all mention of it. Never got brought up at Wrestlemania, and Earl Hebner even refereed several matches in the tournament without any mention of his name, Dave Hebner’s name, or any referee even being named. Meanwhile, NWA’s handling of Steve Williams returning gets a mention as well. Not only is he no longer mentioned as UWF champion, they’re acting like the UWF championship has never existed. And we thought McMahon was the worst when it came to ignoring wrestling history. They also forgot his heel turn from before he quit and his feud with Barry Windham, since he and Windham are teaming on the April 17 WTBS Main Event show.
  • WWF still wins the PR game, even if they had less than a third the viewership on Sunday. All news media converge of the weekend in wrestling was about WWF. Even CNN, owned by Ted Turner, gave five minutes coverage to Wrestlemania and ignored the Clash, and several outlets went along with WWF’s claim of having 10 million U.S. viewers. USA today went so far as to claim 50 million. The lesson is obvious - NWA will be ignored in the media unless they start lying, and lying huge, just like WWF. And don’t blame WWF - until the media calls them on it, they’ve got no reason not to lie.
  • So back to USA Today and their claim of 50 million viewers in 38 countries, that’s just not true. 36 of those countries have to be fictitious, because the U.S. was the only country getting Wrestlemania on ppv, Canada was the only other country with closed-circuit, and no other countries had it on free tv. They’ll probably be on free tv in about a year in the Middle East (Dave’s comedian brother toured over there last year and WWF is big there, but they’re about 11 months behind on tapes). For Wrestlemania to have had 50 million viewers would require an average of about 90 people at every home that bought it on ppv.
  • Compared to previous Wrestlemanias, Wrestlemania was pretty bad on all fronts. The card was the worst yet by a large margin. It drew the worst on closed-circuit, only drawing half the numbers of Wrestlemanias 1 and 3. Due to the increased reach of ppv this year, it’s probably similar overall to Wrestlemania 3 in terms of overall money from ppv, but the buyrate was only a little over half the previous buyrates.
  • Most Quickly forgotten major attraction: The Rock and Roll Express.
  • Ric Flair gets spot of the night. At the 43 minute mark, he flipped into the turnbuckle and landed on his feet on the apron before going over to the other corner to come off with a flying body press that Sting reversed for a near fall.
  • Hogan wins the best smartass remark. When asked by a reporter whether him not winning the tournament meant he’d be going to the movies, he said “Yeah, I’m going to see Fatal Attraction.”
  • George Steele getting that green gets a note here for the best ratio of getting paid to doing work. Steele never even got in the ring or laid hands on anyone during the battle royal. Nevertheless, he surely got a handsome check. Get paid, Georgie.
  • Wrestlemania wasn’t supposed to be available on satellite, but was. Dish owners got the show descrambled, just without audio. Honestly, it’s probably an improved experience.
  • Dave poses a question and provides his own analysis: would Crockett and McMahon trade places? Crockett would surely take a $16 million gross for a show that is objectively an artistic failure, no doubt about that. Would McMahon prefer to have a great show that sabotaged his competition, even if he made less money? Very probably.
  • Dave makes a snide remark about what WWF can sell to counter the Four Horsemen vitamins (which he calls a total joke). For $39.95 you’ll get the perfect system you can use to calm “hyperactive children and put them to sleep, and help your own insomnia late at night.” Wrestlemania IV the video tape.
Watch: there's so little this week, so here, watch Wrestling With Wregret's review of Wrestlemania IV
  • Dave gives himself the worst analysis award. His read that Crockett couldn’t hurt WWF and that Wrestlemania would gross $25 million was so wrong it’s laughable, and his only solace is that he didn’t make the most ridiculous projections. That award goes to WWF. What this weekend really proved is that fans pretty much only care about personalities and belts mean nothing.
  • Big props to the Fantastics, because they worked their asses off.
  • Duggan being unable to have a good match with DiBiase is the saddest sight of the two shows for Dave. Especially sad considering the match they had in August that was pretty good, despite Duggn weighing over 300 lbs and blowing out his hamstring and blowing up within two minutes. And that was still a better match.
  • Dave says Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Bam Bam, and the Road Warriors all lost steam on Sunday. Savage is particularly notable, being the first guy to lose steam while winning a world title.
  • For years, Flair has lost a lot while Hogan wins all the time, which would make the average mark think Hogan is better. A mark watching both shows this past Sunday may well come away thinking Flair is a better wrestler.
  • Does this mean the wrestling boom times are over? Well, we’re down from the peak and wrestling is overexposed nationwide. Smaller promotions are not going to survive, and the big ones are drawing smaller crowds. Wrestlemania is probably just a stubbed toe for WWF. It’ll hurt for a short bit, but things will go back to normal soon enough.
  • Finally, Dave looks to the future. Crockett is undoubtedly the big winner on March 27 and they’ve turned momentum around by proving they can present a show right and give quality matches that lead to a show that WWF’s glitz can’t match. They won’t surpass WWF to become number one, but they don’t need to. Their success does not depend on WWF. Their success depends on their audience, and the enthusiasm of their audience has breathed life into them once again. And yet, they’re still making unforced errors. Saturday after the Clash, they have Flair and Sting headlining matches in both Baltimore and Philadelphia, having to rush a match in one city, drive to the other quick, and do it again. It’s a recipe for two bad shows. And as long as they keep doing stuff like that which makes their live shows bad, they’re going to fail to be what they can be and they’ll start to slide again. And they have a lot of potential. Given their ratings for Clash, they may not have as many fans as WWF, but for all WWF’s advantages NWA is far closer to WWF than you’d think they would be. They’re real competition at this stage, and it’s ironic because until Vince decided to pick a fight on Thanksgiving and again in January, they simply were not any kind of competition to WWF. Vince forced Crockett to have to retaliate, and it gave Crockett the motivation to take steps he never would have taken before. Still, we’re back to NWA being the Dusty Rhodes show. Every heel talks about Dusty in their promos and half the faces as well. It’s what hurt them last year, putting all their eggs in Dusty’s basket, and just as they begin having some success, they go right to the poisoned well again. Then again, their most recent main event show was really good, so maybe they are on the right track.
  • Nobody in Hollywood knows anything about any Hulk Hogan movie. So that whole biopic that we’ve been talking about for months? Yeah, that doesn’t seem to be a thing and won’t be for over 30 years when they cast Hulk Hogan properly: as a beautiful Australian man with the body of a Norse god. Anyway, Hogan’s definitely taking time off, what with his child being born soon. As for any momentum lost, WWF will probably mitigate that issue with clever sound editing to make Wrestlemania look like a success. What matters to WWF is image, not substance. If they can make their fans believe the show was a success, it will cease to be a failure. They’ve got some truly magical powers there, but there are problems they need to overcome. And the biggest is that nobody except Hogan is truly over. They spent months building angles that flopped (such as Heenan vs. Matilda) and nothing they’re hyping next has any kind of box office potential. Do you think after what we got at Wrestlemania people are going to want to see Rude vs. Roberts? JYD vs. Ron Bass? Duggan vs. Andre? Savage vs. DiBiase won’t mean anything.
  • In closing, Dave says the moral of the story is that WWF made good short-term moves that came back to bite them big. They destroyed Crockett on Thanksgiving, costing Crockett over $2 million of their potential for Starrcade and keeping them off ppv in a big way. On January 24, they ran a free show against the Bunkhouse Stampede to sabotage the show. Crockett’s retaliation in March, however, showed they have a cable audience nearly as large as WWF’s and they cost Wrestlemania several million dollars in lost revenue. It may be a lucky day for them. Maybe it’s a turning point for wrestling as a whole that we’ll be talking about years from now. But the main takeaway is Vince has nobody to blame but himself. Live by the sword, die by the sword, what goes around comes around.
  • As we all know, WWF ran an ad during Clash of the Champions. Apparently they bought five ad slots under a fake company name. Four of them were caught, but one made it to air.
  • Wrestlemania V is scheduled for March 19, 1989. That's all Dave knows.
  • Financial News Network has begun airing weekly main events from Memphis on Saturday nights. The April 2 show had Eddie Gilbert and Jerry Lawler from March 28, while next week will be Curt Hennig vs. Jerry Lawler in a stretcher match. NWF is scheduled to do a tv taping later this month for FNN which will debut in that timeslot, but for now Memphis will continue airing.
Watch: Eddie Gilbert vs. Jerry Lawler, parking lot brawl
  • This past Sunday NWA debuted their NWA Main Event show and it was good. The show was taped on March 31 and had a super invested crowd and it showed on tv. It really helps matches to have a crowd that’s going crazy for every spot (looking at you, Corpus Christi). Some production issues aside, it’s becoming a lot of fun to watch the NWA. Road Warriors squashed Super Destroyer and Larry Zbyzkso, Dusty beat Ivan Koloff for the U.S. title in a surprisingly good 6 minute match, and FlaiBlanchard/Anderson beat LugeWindham/Sting in an excellent match.
  • [AJW] Chigusa Nagayo and AJW toured Thailand two weeks back and drew big during their visit. Crowds ranged from 8,000-11,000 and the Bangkok newspaper called them “The new craze of Thailand.” Not everybody’s quite so impressed, though, Dave notes. One Thai reporter wrote this: “I didn’t know that women’s wrestlin[g] was drawing so much attention in Thailand. The visit of the Japanese wrestlers has created tremendous interest and according to promoter Sombhop Srisomwongse, a record crowd is expected tonight at the National Stadium. How surprising it is that a few women with about two months of training and especially big framework, a few flying kicks and some TV exposure could be a draw here when traditional Olympic sports like Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling failed to find a foothold.”
  • [All Japan] When Brody won the International Title from Jumbo Tsuruta on March 27, he went into the crowd and started hugging the fans. It got him over huge as a babyface. Brody’s one of the smartest guys in the business, seriously.
  • During an All Japan press conference with Tiger Jeet Singh and Abdullah the Butcher, Singh went nuts and started attacking reporters (?). I think it’s reporters. Dave wrote “reports” but the context of a melee makes me think reporters. Anyway, Butcher did stuff too once things got out of hand and wound up throwing a glass, which hit the head of a Gong Magazine reporter hard enough that he bled and needed two stitches.
  • The Malenko brothers met Mike Tyson when they were in Japan. Tyson’s “all the rage” over in Japan, and he thought they were the British Bulldogs. The Malenkos went along with it and pretended to be the Bulldogs until he asked if he could pet Matilda.
  • WCCW’s financial issues have caused significant cutbacks to tv tapings. They’re running shows in Fort Worth every third week now, a cutback from every other week and a far cry from the weekly shows they used to run dating all the way back to the 40s, and these shows are four hour tv tapings. The regular tv show is also taping only every three weeks.
  • WCCW may move the May 8 Parade of Champions show to the Cotton Bowl from Texas Stadium. Nothing certain yet, but there’s talk of some kind of triple cage gimmick.
  • The Penthouse Von Erich story has been dropped from the July issue. No reschedule has been announced.
  • Fabulous Lance still hasn’t shown up in WCCW because he extended his South Africa tour, where he’s a babyface. He’s even using the Von Erich name down there. There’s legit heat between him and Kevin and Kerry due to all the stuff that went down when he left and Fritz’s burial of him, and Dave just wonders how bad a Lance vs. Kevin match would be in the best of circumstances, never mind if they can’t stand each other enough to cooperate.
  • Not much details about the March 28 Memphis card, but Lawler threw fire in Eddie Gilbert’s face. The Bruise Brothers (Harris brothers) won the Southern Tag titles from Gary Young and Max Pain. The crowd had 5,500.
  • Memphis dropped ticket prices for students to $1 for the April 4 show to ensure good turnout for Jerry Lawler vs. Curt Hennig in a non-title stretcher match. Eddie Gilbert is also putting up a $25,000 bounty for anyone who can break Lawler's leg. Gilbert’s gone from the territory, but he’s supposedly going to keep sending promo tapes in to keep the bounty thing going as part of a working arrangement between Memphis, Continental, Jerry Blackwell’s Georgia promotion, and the Florida promotion Steve Keirn and Jerry Jarrett are talking about starting. Also, Missy Hyatt will be managing Hennig in the Lawler match.
  • WWF has announced a bunch of post-Wrestlemania shows with Savage/DiBiase headlining through the end of May, at the very least. No sign of Hogan anywhere through that period.
  • All of the letters are reactions to Sunday’s shows. Some choice quotes presented without other context:
“If someone had spent millions of dollars on an anti-wrestling propaganda piece, he couldn’t have approached the job that Vince did on himself this weekend.”
“Crockett smashes. Titan crashes.”
“$17 for pay-per-view and $20 for pizzas, pretzels and chips. And what did I get for it? Nothing. Wrestlemania was a bore, plain and simple.”
“Vince has sucked me into my last PPV. Never again.”
”The Crockett wrestlers put on one hell of a show. It was better than Titan’s They had to. They’re number two. But the booking still left a lot to be desired.”
”Titan usually learns from its mistakes.”
”I thought Wrestlemania IV was better because of superior atmosphere and the fact that the guys all tried to work hard.”
”Vince went for flash and name dropping. Crockett went for good wrestling. Crockett succeeded.”
  • Ron Simmons may be headed to New Japan in May.
  • Verne Gagne has started showing lots of pre-1984 tape of WWF main guys like Hogan, Ventura, etc. Why? To build his tv ratings by showing that he used to have the guys who get the ratings now. It’s a clear sign he’s pretty much giving up on house shows and is looking to keep alive through small sold shows enough to keep producing tapes for ESPN. The death of the AWA is a slow, pathetic thing that already feels really drawn out, and there’s still years left.
  • [NWA] The Dusty Rhodes suspension has been delayed and won’t be announced until this weekend’s television, and will go into effect April 16. The reason is to allow him to wrestle April 15 in Boston Gardens. They’ve already got Midnight Rider appearances booked for some shows, though.
  • Nikita Koloff will face Ric Flair on night two of the Crockett Cup. Sting would make the most sense, given how hot he is. Luger or Steve Williams would be hot, since they’ve never had the opportunity. Even Windham would at least guarantee a fantastic match. But Dusty’s giving the match to Koloff. Whatever reasons he has, they have little to do with making sense.
  • Magnum T.A. is being sued by Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Charlotte Rehabilitation Hospital for $56,692 in back medical care. His medical expenses have gone over $100,000, and his insurance coverage only covers $25,000. Related, a Toronto spinal cord expert has proposed an operation which he claims will give Magnum full use of his bad limbs and even a slim chance of returning to the ring.
  • Syndicated ratings for the week ending March 13 have WWF in 4th place with a 10.7 on 248 stations. Crockett ranks 6th with a 7.8 on 178 stations, and All-Star Wrestling (AWA, GLOW, etc.) ranks 9th with a 7.2 on 174 stations.
  • There’s a planned wrestling movie with Roddy Piper for a Christmas release. Nothing comes of this. But it’s nice that Piper has so many movie role ideas being thrown at him.
  • [All Japan] The thing with Tenryu and Hansen has made Stan Hansen’s popularity surge in Japan. They worked the shoot all the way to Tenryu’s hotel room, with Tenryu leaving the arena early and Hansen looking for him in the dressing room and later going to Tenryu’s hotel to try and find him, but Tenryu wouldn’t leave the room. Fans in Japan now believe Tenryu, the hottest wrestler in the country, is afraid of Hansen, which puts Hansen in that upper echelon of guys who come off as “real” like Brody and Akira Maeda.
  • Jim Shyman’s 976 wrestling hotline in L.A. was rated top 976 number in an L.A. publication. It’s the first time Dave’s seen anything pro wrestling top any chart in any category.
NEXT WEEK: Akira Maeda announces new UWF, another shoot in New Japan, WWF reveals internal Wrestlemania projections, and more

2020.09.14 14:44 HDBlackSheep My [29M] girlfriend [24F] is acting in a very ambiguous way and I fear we're headed toward a break-up.

Hi everyone,
I tried to do a title as descriptive as possible.
So here is the situation :
My GF comes from a city not far from mine, but she decided to study abroad, so she spent the last two years abroad. Last year was her last year of Master and she had to take a traineeship, so she decided to take it in my city in a museum. Her plan was : 6 month here for her traineeship then going back abroad to finish her studies and then come back here to do a second masters.
We met on a dating app last year on september 20th (I'm saying it because it matters for later). We have been very fusionnal from the start, and we've been seeing each other a lot right from the start : on the first week we saw each other 3 times, we spent the night together and stayed together all day in the morning.
Between october and december, we settled to seeing each other 3 to 4 times a week.
Then during her exams, she spent most of her time at my place, except when she had an exam coming soon and needed some time to really study in "hardcore mode".
Early february she went back abroad to finish her studies, planning to spend the next 4-5 months there. Originally we planned to visit each other every few weeks so we wouldn't have to spend too much time apart.
That's around that time that she started suggesting the idea that maybe, we could live together next year (academic year 2020-2021). I wasn't really on board to begin with, but over the weeks, speaking about it (the fact she was already at my place most of the time for instance) and thinking about how we felt for each other, I went from a "I would rather not" to a "Maybe, we will see how it goes by then" to a "Why not, let's do it".
She also wanted us to move to a new place that would be "our place" and not just "my place" (and that would be a little bit more affordable).
I then had a trip to Thailand for three weeks from february 22 to march 14. During that time, we called each other everyday, we texted a lot, and she did a lot of appartments research (she was very motivated in finding an appartment for us).
When I flew back home, she suprised me at the airport (I thought she was still abroad), we reunited (it was romantic, fiery, etc, just like in a movie) and the plan was to spend the week together, then we'd go abroad together, I'd leave after the week-end was over and we'd settle in our temporary long distance relationship.
Enter Covid-19 : in the middle of that week, our country went in lockdown, and my girlfriend, fearing she'd be stuck abroad for months decided to stay with me. We spent the lock down together, and we kinda realized it was silly to find a new place, first of all because I lucked out on my place (it's a very good price for the size and it's well situated), second, because I already have a lot of furnitures that would not fit in many other places, third, because it was forbidden to organize visits for a couple of months and last, because my GF started to really like my appartment.
So we spent the lock-down together, and it went rather well. We didn't have many fights, spent almost 24/7 together for months and we didn't feel sick of each other or anything. From mid-march to the end of july. I did notice that she was getting less physical with the time though.
We arrived to the logical conclusion that living together wouldn't be a problem considering we kinda "weathered the storm" of the lock-down.
Now, during all those months, she had been writing her master thesis .. at a disastrous rate. The lock-down really made it hard on her : she wasn't motivated, when she got to working, it was a slow and atedious advance, and we didn't get to go out and do activities to help her change her mind.
She was trying to finish it for the end of June at first, but she eventually realised she couldn't make it, so she went for the mid-august deadline.
At the end of July, she went back abroad to finish her thesis and get a chance to say good-bye to her life there. And that's when shit started : she didn't manage to finish her thesis in time and decided to postpone to mid-september, she didn't get to see all the friends she wanted to see there, and when she came back after two and a half week, instead of having a fiery, romantic reunion, she broke into tears as soon as we got home. She said she missed her life there, that she wasn't sure about her future, that she wasn't sure she wanted to make the compromises necessary to live with someone (she always pictured herself able to pick her stuff up and leave for another country if the chance arose), and that she feared being in a relationship would tie her down. We discussed, I told her that I didn't necessary plan to stay in one place, but that I didn't envision moving for the next two to three years. Little parenthesis here : when I went to Thailand, I met so many people taking months or a year off and traveling, and I enjoyed traveling abroad so much that I decided that I wanted to travel more in my future. My GF said she wanted to, at some point, make a big trip abroad for a few months at least, and I was really seduced by the idea. So we ended up "planning" (air quotes because it's still in the idea stage) to take a year off to travel around the world in a few years (maybe 3 to 4, so we can save some money for it, and get some professionnal experience before). Closing the parenthesis.
Basically I told her I wanted to be relatively stable for the next two years (she's doing 1 year masters this year anyway), probably three, then see where I go, with the idea that it would be nice to travel around the world first before throwing everything away and relocate to a new place where we will need time to settle, get our marks, learn the language, etc.
She kinda agreed to it, told me that having this discussion really helped her see she wasn't "cornered" and made her feel better.
So that was mid august. Three weeks from now. The next week we went on vacation to Croatia (we had planned it before we knew she wouldn't meet her august deadline). The week there was great, I feel like we really both needed it after months of lock-down and stress.
Back from Croatia (week - 2), she had to move out of her place abroad, so her dad brought all her stuff back to my place. So that was getting real now, with all her stuff at my place (she already had a good amount before, but now all her stuff is here).
The very next morning, she looks off, I talk to her and she ends up telling me she has doubts. That she doesn't know if it's a good idea to live together, that she's not sure she's ready to make the necessary concessions, that she wants to be able to live her own life, invite friends whenever she wants, go out with them without owing anybody any explanations. That she's afraid that seeing each other all the time, but not necessarily as quality time, will kill our relationship. That she thinks maybe it's better that she finds a place to live nearby, so we can both have our own place, even if she ends up being at my place 6 nights per week.
It took me a moment to swallow the pill (inside, I was like "did you really NEVER think about that before all your stuff is at my place ? seriously wtf ?"), but I eventually told her I understood (I did tell her it was annoying she'd consider all that only now, that I had considered it long before, when she proposed that we'd live together), and that I didn't want to pressure her to anything, that the last thing I wanted was to force her into a position where she would be unhappy. I told her she could take her own place and that we could back-pedal back to before the lock-down.
I wake up the next morning, and I expect her to be looking for places to live. Nope, she's changed her mind. She says that knowing that I understand and was accepting her choice made her feel much better, lifted the pressure she felt, and that she realised she was sad at the idea to leave, so now she stays. For now. (for fuck sake, I will never understand women). So we settle for this : we will try living together, if it doesn't work, or if she feels unhappy (or if I feel unhappy for that matter), she finds her own place and we go back to how it was before. Cool.
So the week pass by, she gets back into working on her master's thesis (it's still a disaster), and I prepare to leave for another vacation in France for a week.
So week - 1, aka last week, I'm off last friday, and go live on an island in Brittany for a week, with very little access to 4G, and a very busy schedule. So I just send her messages in the morning, at noon and in the evening. I do the best I can to check up on her and see how she's doing whenever I can.
The week flies by at the speed of light, and that brings us to Saturday night. She's in full stress for her thesis because her deadline is on wednesday and she doesn't know how she'll meet it. When I get home, you get it, it's not the fiery, romantic and sexy reunion yet again, but I'm greeted by a girlfriend who is neck-deep in her thesis, has basically no time for me and is stressed out. Now if it was only that, I'm ok with it, I understand. It's not what I dreamt about for a week, but I am a realistic dude, I know big priorities like this get in the way.
However, after we chat a little, she still seems off, so I ask her if there is anything else.. And then she tells me. She tells me she doesn't feel whole anymore because of her thesis, that she can't be present in anything really because of it always looming over her, that she has doubts. She says she doesn't feel the same thing for me anymore. She says she doesn't know if it's the stress of the thesis, if it's a temporary bumps. If it's the routine we had during the lockdown, where we would stay home all day, watch some netflix, not see anyone, not have any activities. That she's not happy that way, that it makes her doubt herself, us, us living together (yet again).
When I asked her if she still loved me (we used to say it to each other, she was the first to say it to me in January, and has said it a lot ever since), she first said "she thought so". She said she feels attached to me, but not in the way she would like. That she isn't passionnate anymore.
I told her "You're not in love with me anymore ? " (making the difference between being in love and loving someone). And she kinda didn't respond. She asked me if I was, I told her I was, but that I didn't want to be if she isn't and if she's going to dump me. That I really don't want to throw myself in this relationship and open my heart even more if she's going to end up dumping me like a turd.
During that discussion she started crying, she said she really don't want us to end, that she wants us to get over this bump and that it's why she's told me all of it. So now I have become full of doubts and restless. I don't know what to think, what to do.
The last thing that made me write this wall of text (for this I am sorry), is that this morning, I was looking for something to do next week-end : I asked her if she wanted to go to the beach and have a nice time, to celebrate the end of her thesis and relieve stress. She told me she had planned a week-end with her family already and was going to be away all week-end.
Now, I wouldn't be alarmed by this, if not for two reasons :
1) She didn't even mention it to me before (she made plan with her sister and her family last week, but didn't think to tell me about it)
2) Next sunday is the 20th of september. Yeah, you got it, our one year anniversary. Now, I'm not very much the kind of guy who puts too much importance in anniversaries, but SHE IS! Without fail, she has been mentionning our X-month anniversary EVERY MONTH since the 20th of october last year. She has also insisted we organised something for our 1, 3 and 6 months and has had little attentions on the other months. And now we get to our 1 year anniversary, a landmark worthy of notice, and she either forgets about it all together, or consciously decides she doesn't want to spend our one year anniversary together. I mean wtf ? What is that supposed to mean ? All I know is that this, on top of everything else that happened in the last month or so, has set up all the alarms and red flags in my head.

So there I am, writing a post on reddit for almost two hours, hoping to get some advice, some outside view. I am sorry I wrote this giant wall of text, and I thank you already if your have read all the way to this point.
PS : I didn't think to mention it before, but I switched job at the begining of this year : I was supposed to start my new gig (in which I have no experience) on the very week our country went into lock-down. This resulted in me being temporarily unemployed ever since. The gig I was supposed to do was cancelled, and my firm has been looking for a new place for me ever since, but I have no experience and my profile isn't very attractive to the clients, considering the massive amount of experienced consultants who have been laid off because of the crisis. I decided last month that after all my vacations (that I was forced to take, even though I'm technically unemployed), I would start looking for a new job somewhere else (to hell with the appearances and the bad reputation of being instable in my carreer, I need to find something at this point).
And right now, all I can thing about when I think about it, is that Chris Rock bit about how when you lose your job, you're against the clock before you lose your girl... That women naturally feel less attracted by a man who loses his job, no matter how much they care about him.

10 best things to see and do in Bangkok - Top ideas from Jean Claude Reuille
Thailand’s capital Bangkok is one of the most visited cities in the world today. This city is thronged by thousands of tourists from all over the globe every year. Being one of the largest and most developed city, it still interests history lovers with its historical architecture and tradition that dates back hundreds of years. The 600 square miles city with a population of over 8 million, is a mix of everything so here you will experience freedom, excitement and chaos, beauty and adventure.

Jean-Claude Reuille
There is so much to explore beyond the temples and shopping malls. Among the hustle and bustle of the city, you will spot skyscrapers, grand palaces, temples and world-renowned floating markets.
We have compiled the 10 best things for you to explore Bangkok like a tourist and a local both:
The Grand Palace
The most world-renowned and glorified landmark in the heart of the capital was built in the course of three years 1782-1785 by King Rama I when the capital moved from Thonburi to Bangkok. It was once the home of the Thai King, the administrative seat of government and the royal court. Now it is just used for ceremonies.
For all the architectural junkies, you can delve into ancient designs of the diverse array of Buddhist sculptures and temples in the complex. The most popular “Wat” meaning temple in English is the Wat Phra Kaew meaning “Temple of the Emerald Buddha”. The dazzling temple contains greatly revered Emerald Buddha dating back to the 14th century. The robes of the Buddha are changed with the seasons by HM, The King of Thailand, a significant ritual in the Buddhist calendar.
There is a strict dress code for visitors who wants to enter the temple. Men must wear a shirt with sleeves and long pants. If you are wearing flip-flops/sandals, wear socks so barefoot is not allowed. Women must also be dressed properly like no see-through or bare shoulders clothes are allowed. There is a booth near the entrance that can rent clothes with a deposit. So you can rent clothes if you wish to.
Tickets to Grand Palace are sold between 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM and in the same ticket price, you can get access to Vimanmek Palace and Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall.
Wat Pho and Wat Arun
Wat Pho (The Temple of Reclining Buddha) is known for its huge golden reclining Buddha statue that was built in the year 1832. This massive statue is 15 meters tall and 46 meters long and covered in gold leaf. It is located right behind the Temple of Emerald Buddha so basically,it is a 10-minute walk from Grand Palace.
You will need to take off your shoes to enter. If you want and believe in good luck, then we recommend purchasing a bowl of coins at the entrance of the hall, which you can drop in the 108 bronze bowls lining the length of the walls. Even if your wish does not come true, the money goes towards renovation and preserving wat Pho. All visitors should not have exposed shoulders or skin above the knee. If you want a guide to escort you and explain the history, then the good English speaking guides are available at 200-400 Thai Baht.
The Traditional Medical and Massage School is also located here. It is considered to be the best massage school in the country so you get your massage done after sightseeing. Arrive early in the morning/late in the afternoon else you’ll have to wait 45 minutes for your massage.
Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, just opposite to the Grand Palace. The spire on the river bank is covered with minute pieces of colorful glass and Chinese porcelain. It is best at night when it is lit up as it gives a golden beam of light over the river. If you wish to see the best view of Bangkok’s skyline, then you can climb this steep 70-meter high spire. Look out for the sunrise and sunset here as the tilted facade reflects the rays beautifully.
Khao San Road
This is the home of the backpackers so also called the backpacker capital of the world. It also attracts the nocturnal party fiend. It is famous for its nightlife and carefree ambiance. It also offers budget accommodation to the tourists. Here all you can find are innumerable bars, hawkers and street stalls. So you can grab a drink, order banana pancakes and also meet other travelers or watch the world go by.
Chinatown
In Chinatown, tradition prevails as you will find many merchandisers selling the same as their forefathers sold generations ago. It is home to lip-smacking food that the restaurants and street stalls offer. There are countless vendors selling food that you have not tasted anywhere else in the city. This place is for the seafood lovers as well so when you wander the narrow streets, you can taste the varieties here.
Apart from the food, the streets also sell clothes at a cheap price but bargaining is necessary here. Sip your favorite drink and enjoy the craziness of the best shopping in Chinatown.
Floating Markets
They are super fun and should not be missed. The two main floating markets are Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom. Locals here paddle their small boats and you can shop here as they pass you. This beautiful sight you can’t see anywhere else than in Southeast Asia. The boats are stocked to the brim with fresh and tropical fruits and vegetables, coconut juice and local food tendered on open grills. You can go for the guided boat tours as well. The other best floating markets are Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa, Bang Nam Pheung and Tha Kha. Arrive early at the floating markets especially Taling Chan to beat the crowd.
River Cruise
You can take a tour of the Chao Phraya River to see the city from a different perspective. The river stretches over 370 km and the cruises offer a beautiful way to see the city. Avoid taking an overpriced river cruise and opt for a water taxi up and down the river for a couple of dollars. Start at the central pier, go till the end and come back.
Museum of Siam
Located at Sanam Chai Road, Siam Museum is a discovery museum that was established in 2007. It highlights the origins of Thailand and its culture. The museum is housed in a 19th century European-style building and is fully interactive. You can explore galleries, movies, multimedia displays on culture, history, Buddhism, war and the making of modern Thailand.
Island in the Chao Praya river
The island of Bang Krachao is not so far from the city centre. It is a manmade island. Take the BTS to the station called Bang Na and then walk down to the end of Sanphawut Road where you reach the Bang Na pier. Take a 2-minute ferry ride across the river where you can hire a bicycle and explore the island for the day. You can also go for a walking trail and see the beauty of nature with lush tropical trees, lakes and raised embankments passing unique houses on stilts built along the river’s edge.
Bangkok Art and Culture Center
Visit the city’s cultural center, if you are a fan of music, art and performance. This was opened in 2007 and it hosts arts, music, theater, film, design and cultural events in its exhibition and performance zones. You can also spend some time at the art library, café, gallery, craft shop and book store present here. The center is open on Tuesday-Sunday from 10 AM to 9 PM. The admission is free here.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
It is a massive and sprawling open-air market and covers an area of 35 acres with over 8000 stalls. This largest market in the city is visited by 2,00,000 visitors every weekend. If you are seeking rare treasures and have the best bargain skills, then this place is for you. There will be a sale on everything starting from foods and beverages, antiques, garden supplies, clothes, handicrafts to books, furniture and art galleries to name a few. Purchase souvenirs and have scrumptious food. Come prepared as it always gets crowded and chaotic.
There is so much to do when you visit Bangkok. Apart from these 10 places, you can also wakeboard at Lake Taco if you are adventurous. It may cost around 500 THB.
You can take a day trip to Ayutthaya (the second capital of Thailand). Here, you will find some ruins and a few temples and palaces still standing after the Burmese attack. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a day trip may cost around 500 THB.
You can also go for a lively cabaret ladyboy show with dancing, K-pop and elaborate costumes. Basically, this is Bangkok’s version of Moulin Rouge. You can visit the Calypso Cabaret or Playhouse or Golden Dome Cabaret.
You can also take a food tour organized by Bangkok Vanguards ( https://bangkokvanguards.com/experiences/the-ultimate-bangkok-foodtou) or watch a Muay Thai Fight (Thai Boxing) at Rajadamnern Stadium or just relax and rejuvenate at Lumpini Park(the largest park in the city) or go for the Thai massage costing around 250 THB for an hour.
Discover a street art trail between Chao Praya river and Charoen Krung Road. The amazing wall murals and street art were created by international artists a few years back.
Bangkok is a world-class city and it is worth spending the time to explore. So we hope you have fun discovering the city in our style!

How to organize your trip - Awesome tips from Jean-Claude Reuille
Happiness is planning a trip to somewhere new. Organizing your trip is one of the daunting tasks but it is also filled with excitement. There are innumerable things to take care of before you leave for your destination and sometimes you forget minute things while organizing your trip. A stress-free experience can only come up with organized planning prior to departure.

https://preview.redd.it/re5woako4hl51.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=318cb5b7b2f4246ed4e365e2395f143cf18d1f26
So here we are with a step-by-step guide to take that stress away from your planning part:
Decide on the travel budget
Even before starting to plan a trip, work on the budget that you want to fix for your trip. Take a good look at the finances and decide how much you want to spend on your vacation. This decision will dictate the future steps as to where you want to head to and for how long.
Figure your travel style
Before embarking on a journey, decide if you would like to travel solo or with your partner, group of friends or family. This decision will help in shaping your trip. Accordingly, you will decide on the places you want to go, accommodations, and modes of transportation. Keep your budget in mind and decide on the traveling companion. There are different options for places if you want to travel solo, a different set of cities when you want to travel with your family or your partner.
Zero in on a destination
Choosing a destination is immensely important as based on this you will further book logistics. If you have a location in mind, make sure you research the best time to visit that place. If you do not have any specific destination, then you may search for country-wise or season-wise. Then you further narrow down your search by the expenses you can make or have planned to make for the trip.
When to travel
This will be based on two factors-weather and tourist crowd. Figure out if it is a peak season or off-season at the place you want to visit. Avoiding travel in peak season is the best as it saves you on a lot of bucks. Moreover, you will get accommodation easily otherwise it is usually sold out in the peak season.
Decide the duration of the trip
Finalize the number of days that you want to travel. This depends on the mode of transportation and your availability. If you are going on a road trip, then it will take longer to reach your destination. Whereas, if you travel by flight, then it will save you time and you will have more time to spend at your destination.
If a place has more attractions for sightseeing, then you will be needing a longer time to cover your places of interest.
Book flights
Before booking flights, decide if you want to purchase a one-way ticket or a round trip. We recommend booking early for better deals. If you book a few months in advance, then you will get a cheap deal. While booking, try to be flexible about the dates if possible. Compare the prices on different travel portals as airfare is the largest expense of your trip. If you travel in a peak season, then booking early will ensure a seat as most of the time flights will be overbooked. Booking at the last minute will lead to higher prices.
Book a connecting flight if you are not in a hurry to reach your destination. It is cheaper as compared to a non-stop flight. You can narrow down your search through the search filters on the website by choosing the same. Flying mixed carriers will also save you some bucks.
Documentation
Some countries may have a provision of visa on arrival and for some, you will have to get it arranged prior to flying. Thailand, Bhutan, Cambodia, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Kenya offer visa on arrival. Depending on your destination and origin, check out for the visa requirements.
Make copies of important travel documents. If you lose the document, then at least you have a copy to prove your identity wherever required. So we advise that you keep the document in one bag and keep the photocopy in another bag. Sometimes you also need a copy of your passport, driver’s license, or another form of identification. We suggest you save them online and print multiple copies and keep them in separate bags. Digital copies are the best way of saving yourself from any trouble.
Book accommodation
We recommend booking accommodation ahead of time to avoid any hassles at the time you reach your destination. This will help you to avoid getting booked up. Otherwise, you can walk into hotels once you arrive in the city.
You can book accommodation depending on your budget and locality where it is established. Choose between a luxury hotel or a budget boutique hotel. You may choose a hotel close to the market or any preferred area which is safer as per the reviews. Some prefer staying close to the airport if they have a short business trip.
Book transfers in advance
You can check with your hotel with which you have made a reservation as many hotels arrange transfers from the airport to the hotel and vice-versa. Some offer complimentary transfers and some will be chargeable.
If you not have booked one, then find out the registered and reputed cab companies and use only those. If you are sharing your ride with someone through an app like Uber, reconfirm the vehicle information before boarding the cab and driver details shared on the app.
Pre-Plan activities
Planning activities in advance is essential for a smooth trip. But vacations do not always go as per plans. There are tourist activities that open for a limited period in a year like rafting. So it is better to search in advance and then go. You can go through the blog posts to explore new and interesting places and things to do. You can research the adventure activities available at your hotel like adventure camps set up by the hotel.
Go through some itineraries and also check Tripadvisor for some quick advice on tourist attractions. Make a list of museums, malls, restaurants, historical places, etc.
Travel Insurance
Invest in travel insurance as accidents may happen anywhere and you must be covered. There are a lot of uncertainties while traveling. In case of unforeseen situations, it can help you to cover the loss and also makes you safe against travel-related emergencies.
Minimize travel risks
Taking vaccination is important if you travel to certain countries. Consult your doctor so that you can take vaccination to protect you from the disease. If you are traveling to South America/Asia, then vaccination of Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid Fever, Yellow Fever, Cholera and Diarrhea are the common ones that you need to take. Some vaccinations you may require more than once so we advise you to visit the doctor a couple of months ago.
Travel Rewards Credit Card
If you have saved money, then get yourself a travel credit card to sign-up bonuses in order to redeem miles and points for free hotel reservations and flights.
Packing tips
Start packing ahead of time to avoid the last-minute hassle. There are certain restrictions involved when you are traveling by air. You cannot keep sharp or pointy objects like scissors, screwdrivers in your handbag. We suggest you wrap in a cloth and carry in checked baggage. Contact customer care for an update of the policy. Sometimes they are not allowed at all and maybe thrown away at the airport. You are not allowed to carry any inflammable liquids with you.
Your medicines should always be packed in cabin baggage. Your chargers and prescriptions if any should also be in cabin baggage. Batteries/lithium icon cells for portable electronic devices should always be removed and kept in checked baggage. Protect the batteries individually to prevent short circuits.
Carrying liquids also comes with restrictions. You need to carry them in checked baggage and secondary, you can carry limited quantity. For the US and UK, rules are different. Read the restrictions on the carrier’s website. We recommend you carry sample-sized travel packs for carrying your body lotions and cream. Perfume also needs to be in the checked baggage. Instead of carrying the whole perfume bottle, use a refillable fragrance atomizer that is quite compact to carry. Place all the liquids in a separate and clear bag to avoid any hassles during the security check at the airport.
Carry your accessories in a separate pouch and you can keep that in carry-on baggage. It is advisable to carry a scarf as you may feel cold in the plane as sometimes the temperature is not comfortable.
The baggage has weight restrictions as well. The same information is there on the baggage tab of airline websites. When you are done packing, always weigh the suitcases and bags.
We hope these tips will ease out the brainstorming phase and you will step confidently in your destination. Hope you will now have fun planning for your next trip!

2020.09.06 03:45 whyme1924 Sources to Counter Common Transphobia

Classification as a Mental Illness

Being trans is not classified as a mental illness by either the American Psychological Association or the World Health Organization. Gender dysphoria or incongruence is recognized by both as a medical condition, and transition is the only treatment recognized as effective and appropriate medical response to this condition. A trans person who has completed transition, and who no longer experiences distress because the conditions previously causing it have been corrected, is no longer diagnosed as having dypshoria or incongruence.
Transgender no longer recognised as 'disorder' by WHO

Citations for the Medical Basis of Gender Identity

Citations for the Medical Necessity of Transition

Citations for the Reduction in Suicide Rates

There are a lot of studies showing that transition improves mental health and quality of life while reducing dysphoria. Not to mention this 2010 meta-analysis of 28 different studies, which found that transition is extremely effective at reducing dysphoria and improving quality of life.

Countering That Swedish "Suicide Study"

the 40% suicide rate is a reference to this study by Dr. Dhejne. The claim that her study shows that transition does not reduce risk of suicide attempts while improving mental health and quality of life is a deliberate misrepresentation popularized by Paul McHugh, a religious extremist and leading member of an anti-gay and anti-trans hate group, who presents himself as a reputable source but publishes work without peer review. His claim to fame is having shut down the Johns Hopkins trans health program in the 70's, which he did not based on medical evidence but on his personal ideological opposition to transition. Johns Hopkins has resumed offering transition related medical care, including reconstructive surgery, and their faculty are finally disavowing him for his irresponsible and ideologically motivated misrepresentation of the current science of sex and gender.
That study's lead author Dr. Dhejne had emphatically denounced McHugh and his misuse of her work. If for those who don't trust the TransAdvocate article, she did so again in her Science AMA last year.
Edit: Details on Dr. Dhejne's often misrepresented study - it found only that trans people who transitioned prior to 1989had slightly higher risk of suicide attempts than the general public. The author attributed this higher risk to the vicious anti-trans discrimination people who transitioned 29+ years ago experienced. The study found no difference in the risk of suicide attempts among trans people who transitioned after 1989, vs the general public.
She is also the primary author the other study I posted below, An analysis of all applications for sex reassignment surgery in Sweden, 1960-2010: prevalence, incidence, and regrets, which found a "regret" rate of 2.2%

Countering Claims of Widespread Transition Regret

This 1% "regret" rate also includes a lot of people who are very happy they transitioned, and continue to live as a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth, but regret that medical error or shitty luck led to low quality surgical results.
This is a risk in any reconstructive surgery, and a success rate of about 99% is astonishingly good for any medical treatment. And "regret" rates have been going down for decades, as surgical methods improve.

Countering Claims that Puberty Blockers are Harmful

There is extensive research about long term use of puberty blockers, and they have overwhelmingly been shown to be very gentle and safe.
This treatment isn't just used for trans youth - it has been the standard treatment for kids with precocious puberty for decades. Most kids with precocious puberty don't have any underlying medical condition, their early development is just an extreme variation of normal development, but it would still cause serious psychological damage to start puberty at the age of, say, 6. This treatment has no long term side effects; it just puts puberty on hold. Stop treatment, and puberty picks up where it left off.

Countering Claims that Trans People Didn't Historically Exist

And while until recently there has been no place in modern US/European culture for people with gender identities and lives atypical to their sex at birth to exist publicly, that isn't true in other times and cultures. Throughout the middle east and Asia there have been Hijra visible in public life for hundreds or even thousands of years. The same is true of Kathoey in Thailand, Muxe in Zapotec culture in Mexico, various two-spirit identities found in indigenous American cultures, Māhū in traditional Hawaiian/Tahitian/Maohi cultures, the Fa'afafine of Samoa, Tongan Fakaleiti, the Sworn Virgins of the Balkans, the Galli of Ancient Rome, etc.
And of course, humans are not the only animals. While we can't interview animals, and gender identity is harder to identify visually in animals than something like same-gender sexual activity is, we sure as hell have observed a lot of animals displaying instinctive behavior typically associated with the other sex. And there very certainly is evidenceof congenital, neurologically based sexually specific behavior in animals.

2020.09.02 06:25 amyranthlovely Japan Travel, COVID-19, And You: Guidelines On Travel & Pandemic News Update Thread - September 2020

September 2020 - Japan continues to be closed to International Tourism at this time, with no indication that the restrictions will relax before the end of 2020. At this time, Japan's borders have only re-opened to Foreign Residents of Japan, along with the previously admitted Japanese Nationals and individuals with special exemptions. In regards to Tourism, please wait until official Government announcements are made and protocol established before booking or rebooking any flights, hotels, or other forms of entertainment for any future trips.

If you are seeking information on re-entry as a Visa Holder, or information on how to renew your Tourist Visa while still in Japan, please check /japanlife for more information. One user, esse11e has graciously provided an excellent writeup on their step-by-step re-entry process recently at Narita Airport with the new allowances in place for returning foreign residents. As this thread is hosted by /japanlife, we ask you to please abide by the rules of their sub at all times.
Travel Restrictions Arriving In Japan for transit to another country are noted here on the MOFA Website. Transit through Japan is ONLY possible through Narita Airport or Haneda Airport. You cannot depart the airport without facing quarantine measures, unless you take a cab from one airport to the other - this is a cost of up to $400.00 USD for a one-way trip. If you have booked your trip already, or are flying on a rebooked ticket, please speak to your airline right away if you have any further concerns.
Travel Restrictions returning FROM Japan are updated here by the IATA. An Interactive Map explaining restrictions is found here, sourced from IATA information.
If you are seeking information on your Work/School related entry, please go to /movingtojapan's Megathread.
A backup of the original thread with minor changes is found in our FAQ. Please check here for the original post from when this situation began, and here for the most recent thread from this event.

MONTHLY SUMMARY

August 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 68,200 - Deaths - 1,285
As we made our way into August concern about Obon in Japan began to rise, as infections in Tokyo especially began to increase. Tokyo's Governor began asking residents to refrain from traditional travel to hometowns, and to stay home as much as possible to curb the spread. Meanwhile, the Government worked on plans to convene an expert panel to shore up defense against the virus. Full-fledged antigen testing started at Narita, in preparation for re-opening the borders to business entry, and allowance of residents to return home. This test is saliva based, allowing a faster return time on results, but all new arrivals to Japan are still required to comply with a 14 day quarantine - many in hotels before they can return to their proper residences. Late August confirmed what many had feared - Japan was enduring a second wave of the outbreak of COVID-19. Tateda Kazuhiro of Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases said, "We are now in the midst of a second wave. People may think coronavirus infections have peaked out, both in Tokyo and nationwide. But we need to closely monitor the situation for whether a resurgence is underway." Tateda said the situation may be worse now than a few months back. The Japanese Government finally announced that re-entry for Residents of Japan with certain statuses would be allowed as of September 1st. Detailed on the MOFA website, this opens up the borders for Foreign Residents who have status for re-entry - namely “Permanent Resident”,”Spouse or Child of Japanese National”, “Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident” and “Long Term Resident” (including the spouse of a Japanese national or Japanese child who does not have these statuses of residence; the same applies hereinafter) - and those who have special exceptional circumstances as noted by the Embassy of their home country. As the month wound down, Japan Airlines revealed a new check-in machine for Arrivals to Japan, Two machines will be tested until September 15. After this, Japan Airlines will decide whether to go ahead with a full-scale roll out of the machines based on passengers' reactions. All Nippon Airways has allowed passengers traveling with infants, and those transferring from international flights, to complete domestic check-in online. Until recently, the company had requested that such passengers stop by the check-in counter.
July 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 35,521 - Deaths - 1,020
As July started, Tokyo confirmed another 67 cases and the Government began to prepare for a possible surge in infections citywide. While the IOC continued to state that the decision to hold off on the Olympics in 2021 can wait until later, Japan began to look to reopening the borders to specific people, as certain citizens are already allowed to begin travel to Japan for business and work purposes. Major airports began to set up PCR test centers to help restore Int'l travel but cases began to rise again in the city and around the country. Coronavirus cases exceeded 30,000 in late July, and the Governor of Tokyo is exploring the possibility of calling another State of Emergency for the city in August. Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki is expected to also declare a state of emergency after the prefecture reported 72 new cases, posting a record for five straight days, according to the Okinawa Times.
June 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 18,631 - Deaths - 972
In early June, Tokyo began the move to Step 2 of the recovery plan after the previous SOE was lifted, but faced a spike in infections shortly thereafter. They also added another 18 countries to the Ban Entry list, and confirmed suspiciouns that the IOC would require the Olympics to be held in 2021 - or not at all. The IOC says they will have a plan finalized for the 2021 Olympics in September 2020. Mid-month, the Japanese government revealed it was beginning a plan to allow up to 250 businesspeople into the country each day from areas like Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam. Cancellations continued with the announcement that the Formula 1 race held in Japan would be cancelled this year, but reopenings were also declared at Universal Studios Japan and Tokyo Disney Parks. Businesspeople from Vietnam became the first to be allowed into the country after a long closure to flights due to the virus. At the end of the month, Japan declared the border closure to continue into July, and added another 18 nations to the entry ban.
May 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 16,759 - Deaths - 882
The State of Emergency that began in April was extended in May due to the strain presented on the medical system, even though daily infections were seeing a downturn. A mere 10 days later, it was revealed the SOE would be lifted in 39 prefectures, but remain in places like Tokyo, Hokkaido and Osaka to further alleviate concerns with the health care system. 12 more countries were added to the Travel Ban list in the meantime. The SOE was later lifted for the areas still covered, such as Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido after consultation with the COVID-19 panel. It was also revealed that if the Tokyo Olympics could not go on in 2021 due to COVID-19 spread, they would be cancelled outright, although the IOC advised they are doing their best to plan for as many possible outcomes as they could. Kitakyushu, newly reopened, began to see a rise in the spread of infections and immediately began closing attractions to curb the spread. The current round of closures is expected to last until at least June 18th. Finally, after widespread confusion, Japan quelled rumours it would pay for half of tourists' expenses as a poorly sourced article had indicated. This article was clarified in english to state that the credit would only apply to local, domestic tourism within the country - and as there is no indication the borders will reopen any time soon it is prudent to advise this will not apply to International tourists at all. As new cases begin to surface again in Tokyo, the Minister in charge of the virus response says there are no plans in place to revive the State Of Emergency for Tokyo or Kitakyushu.
April 2020 Summary - Confirmed Cases - 14,119 - Deaths - 435
With the virus increasing in spread Japan began increasing travel restrictions into the country on April 3rd, including Canada, the UK, Greece and most of Europe. As travel restrictions increased and flights were getting scarce, foreigners were given an automatic Visa Renewal of 3 months, no application necessary. A State of Emergency was declared, initially for only 7 prefectures, but it was then shifted nationwide on April 16th further restricting movement to, from, and within the country. On April 29th, Japan added 14 more countries to the ban list, barring citizens or those who had traveled to many parts of Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.
March 2020 Summary
The reality of the pandemic spread began to set in worldwide and countries began issuing Travel Advisories to their citizens and urging them to return home immediately. 14 day quarantine on arrival for some countries was requested by officials, and towards the end of the month, Japan posted travel bans for citizens from China, Korea, the USA and parts of Europe that were already seeing a large increase in the spread of the virus. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed officially, with a re-start date of July 23rd, 2021 being selected. Trains in Japan began to set slower schedules, due to the lack of tourists and locals traveling in order to curb the spread of the virus.
January 2020 Summary
01/31 - The NHK has published an article reporting that JNTO has a phone number to call should tourists currently in Japan require assistance. We have reprinted the information below, and ask that you check the JNTO's official website for any further information.
"The Japan National Tourism Organization is offering phone consultation services for foreign tourists who are concerned about the new strain of coronavirus."
"The Japan Visitor Hotline offers 24-hour services in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. The hotline can refer callers who may be infected with the virus to the nearest medical institution. It also provides information on measures to prevent infection such as hand washing and gargling. The organization encourages foreign tourists to call if they have any concerns."
"The hotline number is 050-3816-2787."

2020.08.25 09:56 suramedia Oppressed Countries

We are individualizing as people, as Muslims. We are just self-centered and just think of ourselves and our close circle. We thought the world was permanent.Good , pleasant life has become our only goal.Better houses, better cars, better clothes.Whereas this world, It is a distressed station where we wait to go to our eternal accommodation.Allah(c.c.) didn't tell us that this world is a paradise, win the exam and go to paradise.Let's wake up and come to ourselves. This place is the world, this is where we live short, troubled and finally die.Let's realize our purpose of arrival, what we will do and who we are.We are Muslim and Muslim are brothers,we are the ummah of the Muhammad(sav).the Ummah sent for all humanity and we have duties.
My purpose of writing this book, show to new Muslim generations and worldly Muslims, where their brothers have been raped and persecution, torture. Our heart must be whining! Your sister is being raped ,your brother has been tortured for years. What a pity if you can't empathize! They are persecuted only because they are Muslims, because Islam is right case.If you don't help your brother, Allah(c.c) asks us! Let's come to ourselves! Let's have a noble temper! Let us be a worthy ummah of our prophet(a.s.m.).Let's notice and act before it's late.
Selamun Aleykum
East Turkestan
Uighurs are trying to survive their religious freedom, fearing their lives under years of Chinese occupation. The Chinese government has been implementing an ethnic cleansing policy for Uighurs since 1949, when it dominated East Turkestan and called the region Xinjiang, or "The Won Land".Tens of thousands of East Turkestans have been slaughtered, imprisoned and forced to emigrate since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Our Muslim female brothers were raped.rape was considered normal.Assimilation and repression policies continue continuously in east Turkestan territory where prayer, fasting, free travel, religious education are restricted.
East Turkestan is in the west of China; It is located in the middle of Central Asia. Since it was the center of the Turkish empires and the homeland of the Turks, it was called "Turkistan", which means the homeland of the Turks in the 7th century. In 1949, the Mao administration invaded East Turkistan and changed its name to "Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region".
According to official figures given by Chinese sources, the size of the East Turkestan geography is 1,600,000 km2 and its population is 20 million 500 thousand. However, contrary to the Chinese government, it is claimed that the real surface area of East Turkestan is 1,823,418 km² and the Uighur population is over 40 million.- The Chinese government has adopted its main mission to dissolve uighur and Kazakh Turks, the main element of the region.Population balance in the region has changed significantly as a result of the Chinese administration's "smelting policy".Today, 54% of east Turkestan's population is Uighur and Kazakh Turks, while the rest are Chinese. In 1949, however, the Chinese population was 3%.
In this smelting policy, the elimination of children, seen as surplus while in the womb, stands out as a method.Tens of thousands of women and children die every year because of abortion and forced sterilization practices; pregnant women's wives are dismissed if they are civil servants and are deprived of all social rights. The war against the religion and spiritual values that communist regimes have placed on the target board manifests itself with the most extreme practices in East Turkestan. For example, worship such as prayer, fasting and hajj of employees in government institutions is considered illegal activity. In order to receive any duties or promotions in the state, you must become a member of the Communist Party.Membership in a party in society means having an privilege in all aspects of life.If a member of the Communist Party committed a felony of execution, his sentence could be reduced to life imprisonment.More clearly, the minimum treatment that a person should see is only done to members of the Communist Party. But the cost of being a member of the Communist Party is quite high; Whether a party member is an officer or an ordinary citizen, it is forbidden to believe in religion by party statute.-Students are prohibited from performing religious obligations such as prayer and fasting, whether at school or outside of school.
It is very difficult to give the exact number of clergy killed by Red China in the 60 years that Turkestan lived under occupation. However, 120,000 clerics were known to have been executed between 1949 and 1952 alone.- When we look at historical sources, we see that the number of mosques built in East Turkestan is quite high.Unfortunately, there are very few people who have survived these mosques.Because Red China has implemented policies for mosques to free the people of East Turkestan.Between 1949 and 1979, 29,000 mosques were destroyed in East Turkestan.Undestroyed mosques were used as pigbarns, military barracks, warehouses or cinemas, theatre satison. In East Turkestan, this situation has recovered a little after Mao's death, but he has been prosecuted to this day.For example, since 1997, 1218 mosques have been forcibly closed in the Hoten region alone, and 939 mosques have been razed.- Whether women are civil servants or housewives, it is considered illegal activity to go to the mosque. Those under the age of 18 are also prohibited from entering mosques with students or not!!
It is imperative that the congregation of each mosque perform their prayers in their own mosque. It is considered illegal for someone to go to a mosque in a neighborhood other than a mosque in their neighborhood. Therefore, these people should be punished. It is forbidden to read the adhan with speakers in mosques. It is also forbidden to perform teravih prayers in mosques other than central mosques. In the higher education institutions that teach in Uighur language, it is mandatory for all courses to be Chinese.Lecturers who cannot explain the lessons in Chinese are pressured to evacuate their positions. This law, which aims to exclude those who do not speak Chinese from society, also aims to completely Chineseize future generations by forgetting its identity, nation, independence, religious faith and native language to the people of East Turkestan. I give you an example of persecution, we are really sad. Forcing Han Chinese and Uighur women to live together, the Chinese Government aims to change the ethnic structure in East Turkestan with systematic rapes. Married women send their husbands to prison and replace them with chinese men.Uighur women are forced to stay in the same house as men from Han Chinese with the disgusting practice called 'Unite and Be A Family'. As a result, they have no choice but to get married.Han Chinese have been raping Uighur women under the name of marriage for years.
Hooray hill for cruels !

Afghanistan
Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world, has a population of about 30 million.Almost half of this population is children. The whole country is almost Muslim.Twenty-three refugees from every thousand
In 1919, he gained independence from a ostensible British control.A short-lived attempt at democracy ended in a coup in 1973 and a communist counter-coup in 1978.The Soviet Union invaded the country in 1979, triggering a long and destructive war to support the Afghan communist regime, which had difficulty staying in power.Hundreds of thousands of people have been martyred. The USSR withdrew in 1989 after international forces backed up anticommunist mujahideen.A series of civil wars. Afghanistan has rich underground resources that are not yet untouched. There are very rich coal and iron deposits on Afghan soil, which are still dependent on exports in many areas, as well as copper, lead, berilyum and zinc. The country's rich hydro power potential is unavailable due to poverty. and in the target of many countries. The September 11, 2001 attacks have launched a new era for Afghanistan. The United States blamed the al-Qaeda group and its leader Osama Bin Laden for the attack in Afghanistan, asking the Taliban, which ruled the country, to close al-Qaeda bases and hand bin Bin Laden over to the United States. On October 7, 2001, a new war began in Afghanistan when US and British aircraft launched airstrikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda targets after the Taliban rejected the request. The 13-year war has been the scene of major debate and human rights abuses. Afghanistan is a victimand oppressed country where wars, occupations, political turmoil and conflicts never end.In 1979, thousands of people were killed and tortured in the country as a result of the Soviet Union's occupation of the United States and coalition forces in 2001.Millions of them had to migrate to the surrounding countries. The growing poverty, political instability and conflict have plunged Afghanistan into great chaos. This has made it difficult for the lives of the people of the country. Deaths, poverty and substance abuse in Afghanistan, where life and property cannot be ensured, never leave the public.

Africa
And africa .oppressed continent.Material and spiritual exploitation since it was discovered by civilized states.?! The continent that is not considered human because the skin is black. The history of massacres in Africa begins with the white man set foot in Africa. For the first time in South Africa, Koi Koi natives learn what the massacre is when white upremacists kill more than 100,000 people. The white man also committed one of his massacres in Namibia.Today, German authorities who want to bring up the events of 1915 do not even want to remember the Nama and Herora massacres. Germany occupied Namibia from 1885 to 1915.this invasion of the Germans was neither like the Invasion of the Portuguese nor the British. Instead of an exploitation scheme for dominating or embracing, they chose a model for destruction and carnage. More than 100,000 Nama and Herero women were killed without saying the child was elderly. In the Kalahari desert, the bodies of locals were eaten for days by wild animals like lions. Drinking water was poisoned to kill the surviving locals, their pastures were burned. From 1885 to 1915, the number of locals they killed was over 600,000. Many local women were raped and impregnated in camps that did not end up killing alone.Today, the community, which is referred to as a hybrid, is nothing more than the legacy of these wild German soldiers.
It's been 25 years since the genocide took place in Rwanda. In a hundred days, nearly a million moderate Hutu and Tutsi were brutally killed by Hutu militia.a million human !In particular, the United States and France were able to watch this crimes against humanity. In fact, France has been proven to contribute to genocide.
Everyone heard of the Algerian massacre.
Algeria, which lived peacefully and peacefully under Ottoman rule for many years, was first occupied by France on June 14, 1830. France has started a systematic study in the region and has tried to assimilate the Algerian people with both ethnic and cultural assimilated offices in most parts of Algeria.Arabic and Berber are banned, French have become the only dominant language, and people's freedom of religion is disrupted. The French army has resorted to a brutal path against the Algerian people who want to get rid of colonial rule; The bombings with the air force, the chemical weapons used, the torture scarring people were tried to intimidate.Despite all the practices and massacres, the Algerian people never gave up their struggle for independence. The most horrific massacres were in 1945.He survived the invasion of Nazi Germany in World War II, when Algerian youth fought for France. In exchange for his help to France, Algeria only wanted independence. But France broke its promise. He sent his army to the squares where the celebrations were held. Cities and villages in Sétif and Guelma were bombed, innocent people were shot, thousands of people were slaughtered without the name of women, children, elderly.About 45,000 people whose only crime was to seek independence were brutally murdered.A massacre was carried out by France, particularly in violent clashes between 1954 and 1962, killing 1.5 million Algerians.. What I'm sorry about here is that most Algerian youths now love France .
The official language of 27 of the 54 countries in Africa is French. Almost all countries have been persecuted in Africa. Here are some of the countries whose civilized state is the colonies of France; Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. There are more colonial countries that maybe we do not know.France has become rich here by killing and raping millions, committing torture, genocide.civilization state ! Hooray hell for oppressors !
On the other hand, the states that have been left to poverty , most of whom are Muslims , Somalia Ethiopia Mali Niger Burkina Faso Tanzania and many other states.Tens of millions of brothers and sisters there are starving and in drought. They can't find clean water. They're starving and dying of thirst.Newborn babies and children die due to various diseases due to the higen-free environment.Women make excuses for children every day because there are no food. They boil the stone in the pot(look like soup).Dads work hard all day for 1 cup of water. Our brothers are hungry and thirsty. They don't even have shoes to wear.We are romp from wealth and abundance. We can't give account. And we have to do something for our hungry brothers. Every 1 minute our brother dies of starvation.

Arakan
Rohingya Muslims are one of the most persecuted ethnic groups in the world, according to United Nations reports.About 3.5 million Rohingya Muslims live worldwide. An estimated 800,000 of them live in their homeland, Arakan, and are still persecuted and tortured. Mynamar's government, which doesn't even take UN officials into the country, is committing genocide against our brothers and sisters.state-sponsored by Buddhist gangs. The Myanmar government's policies, which ignore Rohingya Muslims, attacks by Buddhist gangs, are aimed at extinct muslims from fertile land.Since 1784, Arakan Muslims have been subjected to great persecution on different dates. One of the largest of these took place in March 1942.Buddhist Rakhines attacked Muslims in the village of Çanbilli in the town of Minbya, slaughtering women, men and children in the village with swords and spears.Rakhines brutally murdered women after raping them, looting the area after the massacre. At least 150,000 Arakan Muslims were massacred and villages were looted and razed to the ground in the attacks, which began in the village of Minbya and spread throughout Arakan and lasted nearly 40 days. The last of the Buddhist attacks took place in June 2012, and thousands of Muslims were killed.several Arakan Muslim women were raped by Myanmar soldiers.hundreds of thousands of them have left the country.Almost all the villages are burning. At the moment Arakan Muslims are not considered citizens in Myanmar, they are not even given identities.

Bosnia
They kill kids with a little bullet, don't they, Mom?
This massacre, carried out on July 11, 1995, is one of the blackest pages in human history. It was the largest massacre in Europe since World War II. 8,372 people died in the massacre. In July 1995, during the Yugoslav civil war, the Serbian army invaded in Srebrenica as part of operation 95 Krivaya. They identified the homes of Muslims, carried out a great massacre.Because at least 8,372 people have been killed by a heavily armed Serbian army in Srebrenica. On that day, .Ratko Miladiç (head of army, murderer) used the following phrases: "Finally, it is time to take revenge on the Turks(Muslims) in this land.".Thousands of people died in the massacre.Thousands of Muslims have been tortured.thousands of women have been raped by Serbian soldiers.Neither the United Nations declared Srebrenica a safe zone nor prevented the military massacre of 600 Dutch Peacekeepers in the city. The United Nations has again been ineffective. Srebrenica massacre and genocide in Europe were engraved in The History of the World.
📷
Central African Republic
Before the massacre began in 2013, Muslims accounted for 10% of Central Africa's population of 5 million. The total number of Muslims in the country is currently unknown, with even official officials refusing to count the number of Muslims killed. There are people who say we have no Muslim brothers.More than 1 million people left their homes after the events that began in December 2013 in the Central African Republic, where different ethnicities coexist.Thousands of people have been killed.more than 2 million people have become unable to meet their basic needs. As Christian gangs began slaughtering Muslims without saying women, children, elderly, large migrations took place from the country.Gangs called Balaka carried out executions, especially by raiding Muslim villages, mosques and houses. The activities of balaka gangs, which have engaged in inhuman acts such as slitting children's throats, slitting pregnant women's bellies, feeding crocodiles alive, are eyeing the activities of the French in the region. As persecution continues against Muslims in the Central African Republic, hundreds of thousands of Muslims are fighting for their lives in refugee camps in Chad and Cameroon.Almost all of the mosques were destroyed. Most of us don't even know this country.
📷
Chechnya
The population in Chechnya, under Russian rule, is about 1.5 million.Thousands of Chechens can't go home because they are in life-threatening danger. Some of the countries they have sheltered deport chechens and hand them over to the pro-Russian Chechen government. In December 1940, when Russian troops invaded the territory of Chechnya, the Chechen-Russian War began.and thousands of Chechen mujahideen were killed. After this war ended on August 30, 1996, a cross-party peace agreement was signed on 12 May 1997.Russia again attacked Chechnya in October 1999, violating the agreement. With human rights violations during the war, Russia targeted hospitals, maternity homes, markets, settlements and convoys of refugees until the end of the war.More than 1500 Chechens were arrested, men were tortured by electric currents, looted houses and seriously questioned thousands of Chechens without saying children, women and old men. The part that could never be put in place was to try to make a deaf and mute Chechen speak by making the most severe tortures, especially the electric current.According to the reports of the High Commissioner for Refugees of the United Nations, approximately 500 thousand Chechens became refugees after the 2nd Chechen-Russian War. The Russian army massacred hundreds of thousands of people, tortured them, and raped women, little girls. The war ended in 2009 with the establishment of a pro-Russian Chechen government. And this government is a butler of Russia. The pressure on our Chechen Muslim brothers still continues.

Egypt
During this time, the Pharaohs, Byzantines, Fatımis, Eyyubis, Mamluks, Ottomans and The British dominated Egypt, which dates back thousands of years. The country, which has a population of about 90 million, is still in a critical position for the Middle East.Ottoman became the focal point because of its position after withdrawing from the country. The February 2011 revolution, which ended the regime of Hosni Mubarak, who ruled the country with corruption and repression for years, was greeted with joy in the entire Islamic world. In the elections after the revolution, Muhammad Mursi, the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, became the country's first democratically elected president.Mursi's election promised a stable legal process in the country, but the intended failed.First, the constitutional court's decisions made parliament dysfunctional, then the media work, which was funded from abroad with huge sums and constantly deroded Mursi's image in the public way, destabilised the stability. After the july 2013 military coup, peaceful demonstrations by people who opposed this lawlessness in Egypt were severely suppressed, killing thousands of people.and leaving persecution. To break the will of the people and to ensure that he submits, the junta regime, which refers to all kinds of human rights violations, is to make unlawful arrests without saying women, elderly, children; he began to issue harsh sentences and death sentences that were not based on any valid legal practice.and thousands of people were imprisoned.Sisi, who has been in charge of the coup, is supported by the Saudi Arabia, Arab Emirates and the United States. Now our Muslim brothers are under pressure
📷
Iraq
Having a say over rich oil reserves after the Ottoman collapse was the main policy of Western countries in this region.Clashes, repressions and occupations were not missing in the history of the country, whose borders were set to rulers after World War I.Since 1980, nearly 1.5 million people died in the country, which has been plagued by war, embargo and internal tensions, with the u.S. invasion in 2003.Thousands of people have been tortured unimaginably.thousands of Muslim siblings have given birth to American children.women have been raped in front of their husbands. The war in Iraq has never ended since.Millions of people were displaced and forced to migrate. The U.S. withdrawal in 2011 did not end the conflict and chaos that pushed into the country, and Iran's growing influence on the region has caused confusion.Persecution and torture in Iraq continue as a result of the discriminatory and repressive policies of the governments that came to power in the country.America and Iran still keep our brothers and sisters under pressure.Hooray hell ! for the wrongdoers.
📷
Kashmir
About 4 million people live in Kashmir territory.Muslims make up 90% of this population. When Kashmir gained independence from Britain's colony in 1947, it remained an unsolvable problem between India and Pakistan since then.India invaded Kashmir. Today, 80% of Kashmir is controlled by India and 20% by Pakistan. To date, serious human rights violations have been carried out in the remaining part of Kashmir in the Indian occupation. There has been severe pressure against the Muslim people of Kashmir who oppose the occupation and seek independence. As a result of these pressures, more than 70,000 Kashmiris have been killed so far, and more than 1.5 million Kashmiris have been displaced.Kashmir remains an unsolvable problem between the two countries, while Muslims continue to live under persecution. Our brothers are under pressure by Indian forces.
📷
Crimea
In World War II, Crimean Tatars were persecuted and exiled from their homeland by the Russians.Crimea, which has a population of about 2 million, is now a minority of 350,000 Tatar Muslims.Tatars, who began to return to their homeland in the late 1980s with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, have been fighting for 30 years to keep their religion and culture alive in very difficult circumstances .Crimeans , who lived under the flag of Ukraine and lost their grandfathers and fathers in exile, were treated as third-class people since they returned to their homeland. They faced constant pressure and obstacles by disenfranchised religious, cultural and social rights. With Russia annexing Crimea in 2014, the country became a territory affiliated with the Russian Federation. The Russians and Ukrainians living in Crimea see Russia's declaration of Crimea as a new opportunity, while Crimean Tatars, with their population of around 350,000, are trying to maintain their hopes for the future.Tatars, who are forced to choose between Ukraine and Russia, are looking for ways to carry out rights struggles in unity. There are more than 200,000 deaths.Thousands of our brothers were tortured, raped by Russian soldiers.More than 300,000 deportations.there is now a state of repression.
📷
Moro
Moro Muslims have been fighting for independence against the Philippines for many years, and today it has a population of about 5 million.Moro Muslims, who lived in their own independent states until the 20th century, lost independence in 1946 when the U.S. colonial rule was released to the Philippine government of the region.Until a few years ago, when there were heavy conflicts, millions of people became refugees; In Moro, where he has been subjected to numerous rights violations such as attacks, detentions and torture, more than 120,000 people have been killed in ongoing conflicts between the Philippine state and Moro Muslims for more than 40 years, and 2 million have been forced to live as refugees. The peace process, which began in 2012, hopes to establish bangsamoro autonomous region today. The Bangsamoro, Autonomous Region, which will be established in Mindanao, one of the three main island communities of the Philippine state, is a major gain for the outcome of the struggle of the Moro people. Now the hopes for a lasting peace in the region are much stronger.Allah(c.c.) help them in the resistance of our brothers and sisters. Amin !
📷
Palestine
And Palestine, the privacy of Muslims.Masjid al Aqsa, our first qibla.Palestine, the holy site of the heavenly religions, is a geography that has been the center of attention of many communities throughout history. The Ottomans protected Palestine for hundreds of years. They knew they couldn't take Palestine as long as it was ottoman. But all the great forces were together with zionists, destroying the Ottoman empire from the inside and outside.the Zionists set up Israel, and became a neighbor to Palestine .In the last century, the Zionist Jewish occupation was the scene of greater atrocities than ever before. Muslims were removed from their homes, displaced, exiled, imprisoned, slaughtered.Thousands of people were killed and tortured. The blockades and massacres committed by the occupying State of Israel to the Muslim people were never over ,ısrael had condone Palestine and attempted to take its land.Thousands of Muslims were killed, especially as a result of air and ground attacks in Gaza.Turning into an open-air prison in Gaza, basic needs such as electricity, food and health are becoming increasingly difficult to address. The persecution of Muslims has been going on for a century..We can't make our voices heard in a collective way by Islamic states. Even some Arab states supported Israel..They invaded They invaded Jerusalem.they invaded our private.we didn't make a sound. We are muted.
📷
Patani
Patani is one of four administrative districts with Muslim majority, despite being affiliated with the Buddhist rule in Thailand.Malay (Malaysian) Muslims make up about 88% of its population.Although the languages they use are Close to Malaysia in Malaysian and Thai. They're trying to make the world known as South Thailand, not Patani. Since 1909, the Thai government has been trying to change the demographics by bringing Buddhist civilians to Patani continuously.Patani is called "Palestine of South Asia" because the Buddhist government is conducting the same policy as Zionist Israel. The people of Patani, who were constantly attacked by Thai soldiers, are estimated to have killed 20,000 so far.More than 30,000 people have been imprisoned by the Buddhist government. In February 2004, an attack on a mosque was carried out by the invading Thai soldiers and 36 Muslims were killed.Thai soldiers who also intervened in the people who staged the demonstration in order to condemn the massacre also killed 83 more people and arrested more than 200 others. There are checkpoints set up by Thai soldiers in the city, where attacks on civilians by the army have been routinely made. The Buddhist administration, which has repeatedly put pressure on the Muslim people, receives the greatest help from Israel and the United States in preventing patani persecution from the world.Although resistance groups continue to fight against Buddhist persecution, they are unable to achieve victory because they do not receive sufficient support from Muslim countries!
📷
Syria
Everyone knows the persecution in Syria.
The last eight years of Syria, which has a population of 25 million, have been driven into civil war with the regime's massacres.Minimum 400,000 dead, 7 million refugees. The Syrian people, who have been fighting against persecution, oppression, corruption and poverty for nearly 60 years, are again facing a large mass slaughter today. The civil war, which began in March 2011 and is still ongoing, has killed more than 400,000 people and displaced millions.the country's head killer continues to kill his own people.Regime soldiers tortured all kinds of torture.thousands of people were injured.women were raped in front of their husbands.Increasing the number of people affected by the crisis and continuing to inflict great wounds on the lives of both society and individuals, it is imperative that efforts to solve the problem be increased.Almost half of Syria's population of 25 million is in need of humanitarian assistance.Nearly 7 million people have taken refuge in neighboring countries as refugees.Right now, the regime is still bombing our Muslim brothers and sisters. And Syria is now fragmented . Iran-backed terrorist organizations in Syria.american-backed terrorist organizations. There are activities of a Russian-backed terrorist organization and many states.Russia and Iran(supposedly Muslim country) are the regime's protects. If it wasn't for Turkey, death and persecution would have increased more.
📷
Uzbekistan
Muslims make up the majority of Uzbekistan's population of 30 million.According to a 2014 report by Human Rights Watch, there are 12,000 detainees in the country for religious reasons, while torture in prisons has become routine.Uzbekistan gained independence on 1 September 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and Islam Karimov took over the country after a controversial election.Kerimov painted a portrait away from his own people and culture in all aspects, arresting thousands of people who opposed him, shutting down dozens of radios, newspapers and televisions. The Kerimov administration, which also prevented the Uzbek people from living freely, closed mosques in the country; He had those who grow beards arrested those who prayed and banned hijabs in public places.Karimov, who is still the country's head of state, continues his repressive and prohibitive stance. In Uzbekistan, which came up again with the news that mass iftars were banned during Ramadan, students were banned from praying at the mosque at all times, especially teravih. It is forbidden to grow beards, teach others the Koran even in their own home, to make pilgrimage to young people, to talk about Islam on the street, to wear Islamic clothes, or even to take religious lessons in schools for men.
📷
Yemen
In Yemen, where one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters is taking place, 22 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid and protection, which account for nearly three-quarters of the population. The United Nations says that every 10 minutes a child under the age of 5 is the victim of a preventable death.Yemen went into a spiral of violence in 2014 when the Shia Husi militia and its allies increased their dominance of the country at gunpoint and coupd against the legitimate government in the capital, Sana.Tensions have escalated in the country since Saudi Arabia and the other Arab-led coalition launched operations against the Houthis in March 2015 to restore the legitimate government. The war in its fourth year has brought Yemen's weak economy and infrastructure to a level of destruction and turned into drama, described by the United Nations (UN) as "the world's greatest humanitarian catastrophe." In the country, women and children are at the top of the vulnerable list.Boys are forcibly armed by groups, while girls are forced into marriage at an early age so they can survive.A quarter of school-age children are deprived of education and nearly 2,500 schools cannot be damaged or educated and most importantly, one mother and one child die every 10 minutes.hundreds of thousands of brothers died. These are our brothers! The persecution here is because of Saudi Arabia and Arab Emirates. What a shame !
📷
Leaders
And our heads of state
There are many oppressed geographies. There are so many Islamic state.why don't they gather and make a sound! Almost all Muslim countries have unmerited presidents. Most dictators (Muslim Middle East states).Even from the presidents who see themselves as prophets. There's no need to count Arab countries, you know.Corruption exists in all Muslim state rulers.Muslim countries can't be ruled like Muslims because of money and ambition for authority. In my opinion, the our Prophet(sav) informed us with the rulers of the Islamic State at the end times .Please look at t Hadiths in Bukhari.
I think we have entered the end times or we're only a little short time to enter.Let's put on and secure our seat belts(our belief, credo).
Islamopbohia
Islamophobia means hatred, discrimination, hostility and hatred towards Muslims. This idea, which came out as a project in Europe, which sees itself a land of civilization, is directed towards Muslims.Mainly in Europe Australia and America. These hatred acts and discourses against Muslims lead to polarization.Thousands of Muslims are slaughtered, killed.mosques are being burned.books are being burned.Muslims are being insulted. The states are quiet.maybe they like it.but civilized! They're calling the police because he's a Muslim. This idea is increasing and more effectively.hatred and hatred are increasing every day.We as Muslims must stand together, we must look out for each other and tell them islam in a beautiful way. Those who want to wear out Islam by projecting and setting traps do not know this.Islam is the sun.U can't touch it.Allah (c.c) is the most auspicious of the conspirators.
📷
And as I've stated, my main purpose in writing this book is to open our eyes, especially young and worldly Muslims.I was so upset when I wrote the book.I cried from time to time.Maybe u too while you're reading.I didn’t give much details in this book . I couldn’t.The details are full of sadness.ı give you a painful example.in countries that are persecuted for example Palestine,Iraq ,Syria. The husbands maimed in front of their wives, became unable to do anything.in front of husbands eyes.their wives, daughters, their mothers, they were raped by dozens of oppressors.they got pregnant.I wonder if we can empathize.can we put ourselves in the situation of that husband or woman.we can't stand it!don't forget that woman, husband is our brother.we're still silent!let's act! like a Muslim.
I'd like to point out that they have the most powerful weapons. we have just stone. we won
Best regards,
Selamu aleykum

A Cinematic Guide to The Weeknd: Pt 1. Trilogy and Kiss Land
Not since Jackson has there been a pop star who was so influenced by film. Without cinema, there is no The Weeknd. I decided to write this after reading his CR interview where he namedrops Der Fan, a pretty serious cinephile cut and one of my favorite films ever. In this series of posts I will attempt to chronicle the major cinematic influences on each album. While I’ve seen some other articles cover similar ground, I haven't really seen it covered in the depth it deserves. However, thats not to say this will be any more complete. I honestly didn’t even go that deep. This is by no means exhaustive, I’m not The Weeknd, I haven’t seen every movie in the world, and even amongst movies I’ve seen, my recall is different from others. Much of this comes from some light research, a familiarity with his catalog, but mostly from my own film watching. At the end of the day, like everyone else, I don’t really know anything.
All that being said, I hope you all enjoy this. I will be posting two more parts covering Beauty Behind The Madness + Starboy, and My Dear Melancholy + After Hours.

Trilogy

Stalker:
Visually referenced in the video for "the Knowing," and titularly referenced in "the Zone", Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker is considered by most to be one of the greatest movies ever made. Stalker follows two philosophers (identified as The Writer and The Professor) as they enlist a guide known only as the Stalker to help them traverse a restricted area called the Zone, which is said to hold a room that grants wishes. It can almost be considered a road movie, with much of the film being the party waxing philosophical as they traverse a hypnotic, Chrenobyl-esque landscape. One of the films main themes is that of desire and wish fulfillment, and the disillusionment that comes with it, a theme that echoes throughout Trilogy. On an aesthetic level, the film, which starts out sepia toned and burst into color when the trio enters the Zone, explores the of escapism of the mundane and into cerebral, psychedelic dream worlds, shades of which can be seen particularly on the House Of Balloons portion of Trilogy, on tracks like "The Party and The After Party" and "What You Need", both exploring tangible physical areas, but also states of mind (zones), their pleasures and desires, but ultimately also the emptiness that they truly occupy.

David Lynch:
On the note of escapism and other worlds, perhaps one of the most foundational influences on Trilogy and The Weeknd overall is the cinema of David Lynch. Lynch’s films are noir leaning phantasmagorical trips full of gangsters, ghosts, and movie stars. The video for the Zone contains a number of possible references to Lynch, such as the eyes appearing over the speeding of the lonely road as a reference to the opening of Lost Highway, and perhaps the road scene in Wild at Heart, and the Thursday Girl in the balloon world also bears some resemblance to The Red Room in Twin Peaks. He’s also name dropped Eraserhead a number of times, but the overall impact of Lynch on his music can’t be counted in just blatant aesthetic references. One of Lynch's films that somewhat parallels Stalker is Mulholland Drive, a horror noir murder mystery (many call the film unclassifiable). Like Stalker, Mulholland Drive sees a party of foils (in this case, a fresh ingenue and a jaded actress) enter a mysterious world, this time investigating a case of mistaken identity and getting drawn into the dark dream world of Hollywood (more on this later). While Mulholland Drive isn’t directly referenced at any point in Trilogy, The Weeknd’s debt to Lynch is more the appropriation of themes, feelings and moods of Lynch’s overall body of work, his "cinematic universe" per se, and into the sonic universe of The Weeknd. But of all the references to his work, it must be noted that Wild at Heart, Lynch’s love on the run movie starring Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern, prominently featured Chris Isaak’s "Wicked Game", and was largely responsible for it becoming a hit in the early 90s.

Vampires:
When describing The Weeknd, many critics evoke towards vampire imagery (one review described him as “Transylvanian”), with good reason. Besides the Nosferatu imagery in the "Wicked Games" video, he’s also expressed a strong affinity for Gary Oldman’s performance in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. From what is known about his background, living with a group of other young runaways it’s likely films like The Lost Boys and Near Dark (more on this later), which revolve around gangs of young vampires, was an influence on him as well, especially in parallel to darker tracks like "Initiation" (A Clockwork Orange likely falls in here as well, more on Kubrick below). One of the most interesting ways this is expressed is in "XO/The Host", which samples George Frederic Handel’s "Sarabande", a metre in dance that was in fact banned in 1583 for “exciting bad emotions.”
https://preview.redd.it/xch6r88mqeh51.png?width=696&format=png&auto=webp&s=614553333a5ec8a7d4a74b61a9c01c2557a334da
Stanley Kubrick:
In addition to it's bloodsucking elements, "Sarabande" is also the recurring theme used in Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, Kubrick being another formative overall influence like Lynch. Kubrick’s ideas and imagery are a constant (Visual references to Eyes Wide Shut in the Secrets and "Twenty Eight" videos, A Clockwork Orange references in "Price on My Head", a general appreciation for the Shining etc.). Like Lynch, Kubrick loves his hallucinatory worlds, however, he is less focused on escapism and instead presents our current world as inherently absurd and psychedelic in itself, and people left to their own devices will reflect that experience. For example, like Lynch’s Blue Velvet, Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut posits that a gilded sexual underworld truly holds the keys to society, and that the sheen of civility is but a thin veneer. However, [Spoiler Alert] Blue Velvet ends with the police getting Dennis Hopper’s iconic villain Frank and the couple that caught him living happily ever after. However Eyes Wide Shut ends with Tom Cruise’s Bill being bullied out of his investigation into the murder of a hooker by a mysterious masked cabal. When he spills out to his wife, she says that all that they do about it is go home and fuck. So while Lynch isn’t exactly an optimist, his works still exist within his own controlled continuum and plane. Kubrick on the other hand, applies his vision to our own world, and presents us with his own theories on our past, present, and future.

Loosies:
While I hesitate to delve too deep into the simple name drops (Nightmare on Elm St. on "Glass Table Girls", "The Birds", etc.) on "Loft Music", I believe he namechecks The Third Man, Carol Reed's seminal noir film of mistaken identity. This is a pretty interesting reference, as The Third Man is considered one of the Great Films by many, and is actually what first made me think he was a cinephile all the way back in the day. I don’t even know if he’s actually referencing it, it would definitely be the oldest film he's mentioned besides Nosferatu (everyone does Nosferatu though), but I don’t think it would be out of his wheelhouse. In the "Twenty Eight" video, much has been made about the stacked televisions and the interview (Videodrome) and the fake street (Eyes Wide Shut). However the scene where he’s watching the girls dance in the movie theater, and the ghost girl in the hotel room is very similar to John Carpenter’s Cigarette Burns, an old Masters of Horror episode starring Norman Reedus as a theater owner who tries to track down a film that’ll make whoever watches it go insane. He’s also spoken before about the Machinist, another film about the divide between dreamworlds and reality, rooted in traumatic experience (it should be noted that the aforementioned Mulholland Drive is rooted in a car crash in which one of the leads experiences amnesia, very similar to the Machinist).

Kiss Land

Blade RunneThe Matrix:
One of the cornerstone films of Kiss Land is Blade Runner, with the Kiss Land world being strongly inspired by Blade Runner’s Los Angeles, November 2019, most notably with the metropolitan Asian influence, the neon signs and the futuristic skyscrapers, as well the film’s Vangelis score (which opened the Kiss Land Memento Mori episode). Most blatantly, there’s "Tears in the Rain", a reference to Rutger Hauer’s classic, improvised ending monologue. The parallels to Kiss Land and Blade Runner run deep on a conceptual level. Many come to Blade Runner expecting a sort of sci-fi adventure film (what Blade Runner 2049 turned out to be), when it is in fact a futuristic neo-noir mood piece. Like Kiss Land, it isn’t so much about the story, but about the scenes, the textures, the world it built and inhabited. To truly feel the Blade Runner influence, check "Not Used To (The Town Demo)", which is available on google drive somewhere on this sub. Another important film to is rather obvious visually, The Matrix. The sci-fi adventure classic, beside serving as a strong aesthetic standpoint, uniquely influenced Kiss Land’s sonic palette of industrial music, noise, and contemporary rock, from the likes of Linkin Park, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, not to mention the cave rave from the second movie, had a strong influence on the sound of Kiss Land, most strikingly the cold, aggressive drums on songs like "Adaptation" and "Love in The Sky."

Only God Forgives/Black Rain/Enter The Void/New Rose Hotel:
Blade Runner isn’t the only Ridley Scott film he pulled from (There’s something to be said about Alien’s haunting Jerry Goldsmith score and its use of icky greens and steely blues), as the Kiss Land concept and storyline was also heavily influenced by Scott’s Black Rain. Black Rain stars Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as two New York City cops who must escort a Yakuza hitman to Tokyo. While not one of Scott’s more famous works, it is a cult classic in certain circles, primarily with the vaporware crowd, for it’s evocative cinematography, metropolitan portrayal of Tokyo, and Hans Zimmer’s "Black Rain Suite." The idea of foreigners lost in the seedy underworlds of the East, a major element in Kiss Land, is also reflected in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives. While Black Rain is a slick, Hollywood production, Only God Forgives is a down and dirty indie. After his huge success with Drive (more on this film later), Winding Refn was interested in doing something less commercial, and put together Only God Forgives in Thailand with a far lower budget than Drive. While Cliff Martinez’s score features the cinematic symphonies so common in the Kiss Land films, one notable motif is his use of huge organs, similar of which can be seen on "Kiss Land. But the pinnacle of the foreigner lost abroad set of films is the infamous Enter the Void, Gaspar Noe’s sleazy psychedelic odyssey through Tokyo underworld. Set in neon soaked strip clubs and red light hotel rooms, besides the thematic and visual influence, like the Matrix, Enter the Void had a strong influence on the sonic palette, with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter providing sound effects, most famously for the film’s iconic title sequence (More on both Noe and Bangalter later). The seediness extends, to Abel Ferrara's New Rose Hotel, a groovy cyberpunk romp about corporate sleaze which takes us on a journey through just as many night clubs and hotel rooms, and is perhaps the pioneering Kiss Land film (more on this film later).

John Carpenter:
With the setting and city playing such a large role, a filmmaker who exemplifies this is John Carpenter, who’s best work makes strong use of location as a character. While he frequently diverges, he markedly enjoys sprawling urban metropolises, best seen in films like Escape From New York, Escape from LA, and They Live (more on this film later), all of which he also composed the soundtrack to, most famously Escape from New York’s iconic intro theme, which was also a likely influence on Kiss Land. While there is likely some mood taken from The Fog, another Carpenter film that influenced Kiss Land was The Thing. He has specifically name dropped this in interviews, and while this isn’t as face obvious as the others, it features a massive, iconic Ennio Morricone soundtrack that mirror Kiss Land’s paranoid blockbuster ambitions.
https://preview.redd.it/5dqvh7twqeh51.png?width=996&format=png&auto=webp&s=cef3077d11ae39fe8d98240bed57736025477029
Early David Cronenberg:
While much has already been made about Kiss Land’s sci-fi influence, David Cronenberg’s horror influence can be felt throughout. He is known as the king of body horror, most impressively seen in films like the Fly, Naked Lunch, and of course, Videodrome , however, most relevant to Kiss Land and possibly The Weeknd overall is his portrayal of sexual deviance. While Ridley Scott and John Carpenter had been anticipating a career in filmmaking for a very long time, Cronenberg’s initial interests were the sciences and academia, specifically botany and lepidopterology (the study of butterflies). As such, his films have a colder, psychological edge but retain an air of elegance and sophistication. As opposed to Lynch’s exploration into the deviance in the underbelly, Cronenberg explores similar deviances amongst the upper class. He enjoys mad scientists and dark lords, his protagonists usually being surgeons, psychologists, ambassadors, etc. This can be seen in Dead Ringers, where Jeremy Irons plays twin surgeons who pretend to be one and date the same woman. The film is a deft mix of drama, horror and sci-fi, (strikingly displayed in the twins surgery “tools” and outfits), and a darkly comedic exploration of sexuality. Videodrome, a well known favorite of The Weeknd, also touches on these ideas of sexual deviances, with James Wood’s Max being a purveyor of smut and engaging in all sorts of bloody, piercing sex to the point that it begins to melt his brain. In a sort of meta twist Cronenberg, even seems to parody his own ideas of exhibitionist sexuality with the play scene at the beginning of the Brood, which possibly served as inspiration on the body show in the "Belong to The World" video.
https://preview.redd.it/dni69nx4reh51.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b43ab942a65429159afc8e8dd959651ed159f59
https://preview.redd.it/kgg5bgt7reh51.png?width=992&format=png&auto=webp&s=773e9b335b1ddcac04fc2b521c4c03996abd2921
Corporate Faculty/Conspiracy:
On the topic of Videodrome, besides it’s body horror, another interesting aspect of the film is it’s portrayal of corporate faculty. When making Trilogy, The Weeked regularly mentions how much time he had as there were no label obligations. With Kiss Land however, he had set up the XO imprint on Republic Records, and was now answerable to corporate powers. Videodrome’s plot revolves around Max, a tv programmer who acquires a menacing tv show called Videodrome that seems to depict graphic torture and killing. As he continues on, he begins to encounter hallucinations and uncovers a conspiracy that stretches across multiple civic organizations. Smuggled inside a body horror scifi film is a powerful commentary on corporate rationale and reasoning, as well as prescient, forward thinking ideas of mass media and its effect on people. This idea appears as well in Carpenter's They Live, a film where Roddy Piper discovers that humans have been replaced by alien zombie like beings who attempt to enslave the earth through subliminal messaging in mass media. This idea of sinister corporations pops up in a number of films, it can be seen in Blade Runner with the Tyrell Corporation, and to an extent the robots of the Matrix harvesting people for energy. However, one of the cuter examples is the Oxcy Cat logo being a play on the logo of Max Shreck’s corporation from Batman Returns, another film involving corporate conspiracies and sexual politics. Shreck is played by Christopher Walken, who is also a lead in New Rose Hotel, Abel Ferrara's film about two corporate raiders who use a lounge singer to seduce a scientist to defect companies. While set in Japan, putting it more in league with Only God Forgives, Black Rain, Enter The Void in the foreigners abroad category, those films explore the more bohemian side of the underworld. Adapted from a William Gibson short story, New Rose Hotel is more concerned with the moral corruption and sexual politics encountered when climbing the ladder in a capitalist society, and the price that must be paid as the ladder is traversed. I believe New Rose Hotel to be a foundational Kiss Land film up there with Blade Runner and The Matrix, the extended lo-fi Kiss Land video seems almost like a stealth remake of the film. While I can't exactly say for sure this was an influence, I do know that The Weeknd is familiar with Bad Lieutenant, Abel Ferrara's most famous film, so it is in the cards. Another speculative film that I have absolutely no proof of would be Olivier Assayas's Demonlover, a brutally sexual tale of corporate espionage taking place in Japan and Paris, over control of a powerful hentai website that may be involved something more sinister.

J-HorroSci-fi:
For a work “set” in Asia, there’s a conspicuous lack of Asian films mentioned on my end. Not to say Asian works are not referenced in Kiss Land, but I do think that the larger influences are films made on Asia by Westerners. The Asian works I believe mostly provide aesthetic, notably the animated films Ghost in a Shell, Casshern, and Akira for their depictions of sci-fi metropolises, and Ju-on: the Grudge for the "Belong to the World" body show. From a thematic standpoint, there is Audition, a definitive J horror film, which revolves around a woman with a mysterious past and Cronenberg-esque sexual deception and body horror, and of which The Weeknd is a known fan. Slightly more obscure and more speculatory however, is the work of Shinya Tsukamoto. While he is best known for his classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man, a body horror classic, I believe his film A Snake of June may have been a strong influence on Kiss Land. A Snake of June is about a woman having an affair who is blackmailed into sexual games over the phone. Shot in an icy blue tinted grayscale, as with many of the Kiss Land works the city (Tokyo) plays as much of a part in the film as the characters, but most interestingly is the intersection between sexuality, technology and voyeurism. Again, this is pure speculation, on one hand I find it hard to believe that this film never came up in his research, but at the same time I myself didn’t discover this film till a little later into my film watching, so I can believe it may have slipped through the cracks.

2020.08.13 09:07 heskethh2 Schedule for the $20,000 Pacific Open Group Stage (SEA & Taiwan Ignition Series)

CGA Pacific Open

This is an IGNITION EVENT that starts qualifying way back to June, features SEA + TW/HK. The prize is $20,000 and that's a lot for a minor region, it's the 1st big championship in this area
How does the SEA Area scene kick up currently?
a lot is going well, the region did embrace the game and organizations are picking it up.
Whether if it's a very top known in-country,or it's an org that you might recognize from PUBG, LoL, or PUBG Mobile doing surprise ventures.

The Three countries going good here is Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia especially Thailand who has the first $3000 tournament with over 2000 signups, and most tournaments with uncapped signups can easily hit 300-500+ teams
there are also a ton of non-Ignition events running actively around here so you can see that the scene is growing organic, its like NA in a smaller scale but without Ignition
No Vietnam because the game have VNG as co-publisher (which took over Garena for all Riot except LoL/TFT) and the game has to undergo approval just like China

The name shine when they won the 2017 Special Force 2 (SKILL in EU) World Championship - Two of the players z3r1w and YokChi are part of that Roster. Also, they have Changee, who is....Only 14 years old and he plays Sova

LEGENDS has NuL who is.. 35 Years old, it's crazy but he competes for a lot of games so it links together
Paper Rex is an org, they are known for their CS team which is a former BOOT Dreamscape (once top SEA CS team). They signed Vindicta the winner of SG Quals
Lastly is SMG, or Still Moving Under Gunfire. Owned by a Singaporean Singer JJ Lin.

2020.08.03 02:12 Comprehensive-Ad2539 What would you do in my place? Can you give me an advice of what to do in my situation?c

In a short *sit* I'm going to try to tell my story and I want to clarify that I'm not really making this for profit or your money. I just want to ask you people for any advice on what they would do in my place?
I'll put something clear and that is i'm not a native speaker my English pretty much suck ass and some people may find that annoying so if you're looking good grammar and spelling you're in the wrong place my friend gonna put tags in the story for divide it in part, so if you're lazy or you just don't give a f*** about reading and specific parts you just can skip.
I'm a Venezuelan refugee living in Perú and trying to do my best for improve myself and get a better quality of life as almost any other individual in the world i guess I mean
that is our basic purpose in life right?.
My situation as a lot of people right now is not the best because of coronavirus and I almost homeless I not going to complain about it and show myself as a miserable person
as a matter of fact is quite the opposite I feel better than I ever in my entire life, and I'm not even being sarcastic but my life was so freaking horrible that I develop
an ability to be comfortable even in the worst of the situations, well almost all of the situations that's is more or less the center of my story.
=context=
Just like the majority of crappy tales this starts with someone as a child and this wouldn't be the exception. I grew up in one of the worst Venezuelans slums "tocuyito" one of the biggest prisons of the country is there; they are also rumors about cannibalism inside the prison and sometimes I get to see people killed in front of my old home so you can have a little idea what is like to live on the south americans slums.
Growing in the slum wasn't so bad... well it was awful actually, drugs, violence, se*ual abuse you name it. We had everything in the slum.
One of my first memories living there was that every evening my dad tried to teach me the multiplication tables. He made me memorize them and if for some reason I just forgot one of the results he beat me with a stick and pulled me from my ears till I cried. Those were some awful times. I was so scared of math that sometimes I pisses myself in school on math class, and in kindergarten I had the best teacher in the world Magda was her name if I remember correctly
She taught me how to make beautiful paintings for a kid and how to cut paper with scissors without cutting myself.
Someday she get sick and for half of the year we had this substitute teacher and this woman was just crazy, she force us to make some weird hand making shit and drawings and no one really can do it because it was so difficult for an infant I remember that she sat all kids that can’t perform those tasks in the “dumb chair” and after that she would beat you in front of everyone.
I was almost traumatized to go there and I was almost traumatized to go home with my dad waiting for me, it was a pretty uncomfortable situation. It was impossible to get rid of that teacher because in the 90s it was actually legal to beat kid at school in the Venezuelan education system.
But one day I got a Super Nintendo as a gift, from a religious organization for poor people on christmas or something like that I think it was like they gave stuff to miserable kids. With only Two cartridges I was in heaven Super Mario World and Donkey Kong , man these games stick in my mind, they help me to pass over a lot of stuff. My parents don't let me play the games because they said that this stuff made people crazy and could destroy your eyes, you know, classic boomer stuff. And the only thing that I could do was spend hours and hours looking at the art of the cartridge and imagining how it would be to play all the other games on the console and how it would be to go to Yohi’s in Dinosaur Island and live there forever.
=Being=
Being weird or not being what is considered a "normal" person in a third world country is a hard thing to achieve if not an impossible thing sometimes. And I've been a pretty weird person all my life, Here's an example I don't know how to define my sexual orientation but I think I like persons of the opposite and same sex but at the same time I just don't feel as a man.does it make sense to you? because it still is even confusing for me and since I grew up in a conservative family I'd never been able to express how I really felt about my sexuality. I was curious about all the thinking that circle inside my mind and I ask: what are these thoughts about other men? Why am I so sick? no one should never know that, but it was an *overwhelming* feeling I just can't hide it so i decided to reveal myself and show what I really feel. I try to share that happiness with others so I go and visited one of my friends she helped me to express myself, I remember I put a lot silly makeup all over my face some color in my tabs and in some weird way I felt i was conquering the work i was so happy like in no other moment in my life at
that moment.I went home and showed my mom how happy I was, told her and explain about the sensation, my heart was rushing like it was about to explode o my God I was so happy
after my mom witness the scene he said: "You are really lucky that your father isn't here because if he was the one who saw that he could even kill you" and after that
She beat me so hard that I can even remember his nails in my face.
I just get tired of always being tagged as an awful person for being different all these kinds of situations and a lot more, made me a really shy person and I started to alienate myself from the world everyday, more alone and miserable like staying alive in death as some kind of zombie .
=adulthood=
Is not hard to guess that I slowly start to transform in some kind of ghoul, just living in my parents house as a parasite scared of everything always rejecting to get out and see the light
I'm not really proud of it. I don't really blame my parents. I mean they just took me there as a parasite and fed me. I don't know why they kept me there.
=work=
You probably are going to hate me for that but I lived as a parasite and I never got the courage to get out of my home until I was 24 because both of my parents died, actually the only family I got alive is my grandma but I never got to know her. I had to start working doing whatever I can Luckily, some friend of my dad found me a job cleaning stuff, it wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst either, I was perfectly able to do it.
=putting an end=
One day in my 26 birthday I decided to end everything in a very painful way by burning myself I really don't know why or how I was able to do such a thing but when depression
takes you to the root of your soul you're not able to think properly and you can do things that could be really dangerous. I got myself covered with some flammable liquid and started the flame but I underestimated how hard my biological desire of staying alive and I decided to jump into the water tank of the house and turn off the fire. I think I still have the pictures of that, they help me to remember how different my life was at that moment. By luck they were pretty superficial burnings ,after a while one friend of mine made a visit and found me on the floor and he gave me assistance , the worst decision in my life to do something like that.
=leaving the country=
After that incident I can't live anymore in there so I sold my parents house for 800$ what is the average price for a house in the slums. While I was moving on with my life, the crisis in Venezuela was exploding and I maybe took the best
decision in my life TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.
=living as a homeless person=
When I finally came to Perú I wasn't the best person for working at anything, without experience without any kind of paperwork I easily end up in the streets living as a homeless
person, and what can I say the streets are really unkind, I had to do awful and unspeakeble things like having sex with people for food or stealing things in supermarkets,
but someday I was in the floor sleeping like everyday and some old lady by the name of Gladys if i remember correctly speak to me about his church and how they helped a lot of people in the streets she helped me to get on trail and I got a pretty basic job delivering stuff and doing anything I can, after a couple of months I was
just walking on the sidewalk and I see an AD in the wall of one restaurant "we are looking for workers in service" it says, so i decided to make a cv an ask the manager, to my surprise he accepted me and I started to work as a waitehelper
=My work as a waiter=
I don't know how but I managed to get a work in a restaurant here in the capital without any kind of paperwork as a waiter for almost one and a half year and
It was absolutely scary, but after one or two months I was amazed when I got to know people from all over the world, France, Thailand, Ukraine, Poland, Japan.
it wasn't the best job in the market but hey at least it was a job MY FIRST REAL JOB, I felt like I was impersonating someone so secure of myself and so confident, suddenly
i didn't feel any fear inside of me anymore I was full of adrenaline I tought I can do anything I propose myself to do and well *since* I don't have any type of education
i thought that would be the best way to start develop my capacities, that's why I decided to learn English so I left my work in the restaurant and take a job as a clerk
In a little store to get time for learning English the payment was even worse but I was able to get time to study Python and English grammar and pronunciation.
=Medical condition=
I've been a really bad student all my life. My concentration was awful. Always tortured with incredibly painful headaches, that affects me in relation to my sleep and diet but since I found documentation about the name of the “condition” or type of headaches I discovered that they were called "headaches with auras” or something like that they really *ucked my cocentration on school when I was a kid however I went to the doctor for that and he told me that I had a serotonin deficiency and after a year of meditation and concentration exercises I have been able to overcome it and my life just changed again. I can focus on anything now and everything seems so different. I can read and educate myself without the horrible pain in my head, it's like living a totally different life.
=Everything changed=
I get enough money to buy a pc so everything seems really easy now. I find myself in a pretty good position in my perspective. I was dating my first girlfriend and much more than that It was absolutely amazing. I was learning new stuff. Now it wasn’t was extremely hard to get my mind focus to learn new things specially math when I was trying to learn i just remember my
dad screaming at me, pulling my ears and telling awful stuff but now I just can totally focus and stay away from everything outside my goal. It took me almost nine months to put myself on trial. A lot of concentration techniques help me with that.
=Learning English and coding=
I started to learn English at the end of last year (that's why my English is so crappy) and also started to learn to code. I choose Python-django(it is a beautiful language) and the basics of Html and Js, my goal is to learn data analysis some day. The math is a little hard but with practice it isn’t as hard as I thought . It is amazing how many things you can learn in the world of programming, especially in web scraping but I'm still pretty green in the field.
=After coronavirus=
After the pandemic everything start to become really difficult, specially for foreigners I wasn't able to had a job anymore and I started to get overwhelmed by debt because
I'm renting and I can't pay anymore since I don't have a job and i only have money enough to buy some food, I was trying to work in a data entry site but it isn't worth anymore because they are too many people in there, I'm trying to get a job with my English or coding skills but I guess I haven't reached a good level yet i try to go to interviews here but as soon as they hear my foreigner accent it is over..
=Live as a foreigner in quarantine=
It is not an easy thing trying to live as a foreigner in another country specially without paperwork, I was able to do some jobs but everyday things seem to be more difficult. Sometimes I feel that people just want to spit in my face when they listen to my accent. I try to take any job I can no matter how tough or filthy it could be but day by day is harder and harder I was even selling things on the streets like candys or somes**t like that but is one of the worst thing that you can do especially because people is so mean sometimes, I don’t blame them but man it really feels bad when someone looks at you like some low life scum without any kind of worth.
= I actually found a job=
Maybe a lot of people are going to say something like "this guy's too lazy for just getting a job he should get one" And I actually get one since I've been looking for some like a madman it's a fun story I guess, it was the only job I found were you can work without documentation or previous prove experience. When i finally get to the place it results what was a call center for scamming people and I'm not going to lie and tell you that I'm the most correct and honorable person and I didn't take the job because I did, but when I was there at the cheap office I had to speak with the tipical *greasy hair* leader of the operation he told me that I had to talk with mostly elderly people on English speaking countries something about giftcards or some
shit like that and I felt really bad about it, but even not feeling good about it I was willing to try. sometimes the desire for survival is even stronger than your morals
and when i get the phone i find out that i just can't do it no matter how hard I tried it just *felt* so... wrong, there're so many old people that have been giving me help in this country and they just fired me xD.
I actually lost like a half of all the money I had paying transportation to go to this place, so I lost the last that I had, because it was located in the most extreme point of the city and after that
now I had nothing, not even for food.I was just so I don't know, confused? because I didn't know what was the worst, the attempt to be a scammer or the failed attempt to be a scammer.
After that I’ve tried to make some work as a freelancer, trying to teach Spanish to people or making some silly things with coding or automating data bases but competition online it’s impossible for beginners on the internet and now i just don’t have more time to work on a profile.
=living alone=
I don't have anyone, no family, friends, pets or anything, I don't have any bounds that force me to anything so I'm free to choose any path I want and that freedom sometimes makes my mind wondering, it is becoming to create thoughts outside my conscious thoughts that I don’t even would thing on a normal situation, like how painful would be to take my own life? how many minutes of suffering before my head just crushed against the floor? It is just one second of suffering compared to getting back on the streets. The next week they are going to cut off the internet and electricity because I am till my freaking head of bills, the landlord doesn’t know anything about it but when he finds out maybe he’s going to kick me off, and I guess that i can’t blame him.
=What to do?=
I'm starting to thing that you know maybe it is just impossible to get out of the slum it always will stick in your mind, no matter what you do you always will be what you are,
maybe that is just the end of the story, so i decided that I should *ill myself it is the only outcome I see. I can't get a job, everything is in quarantine, I even tried to pick up garbage and recycle it, worked a little with it, but the government closed the recycling places because people said they were focused on contamination for coronavirus. At least I tried to do everything to get better, maybe after trying and trying is the only right thing to do, don’t you think so?, because everything seems just impossible for me. I don't want to end in the streets again. I don’t know, maybe it's time to give up, and finally putting an end to everything, maybe non educated people like me just can’t compete in the world these days and if that is a reality, well I guess I can't really do anything against that.. What I have done may be a little for you, but for me those were big achievements and an amazing trip. I got to see things that I'd never imagined I would be able to see when I was in the slum.
I just know that no matter what happens in the future, I'm in peace with whatever happens to me., I'm happy with all the things I learned so far.
So the big question is. what would you do in my position? What do you think is the right path to choose?
I'm really sorry if someone find this annoying or offensive in someway, I'm not mean to provoke any bad reaction on people with this post and i know my English is extremely broken, sorry for that too.

TOURISM NEWS UPDATES

08/30 - From NHK News - Japan Airlines Try No-Contact Check-In Systems. Two machines will be tested until September 15.
08/18 - From NHK News - Expert: Japan In Second Wave Of Outbreak.Tateda Kazuhiro of Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases said, "We are now in the midst of a second wave. People may think coronavirus infections have peaked out, both in Tokyo and nationwide. But we need to closely monitor the situation for whether a resurgence is underway." Tateda said the situation may be worse now than a few months back.
08/08 - From The Japan Times - Japan's Summer Holiday Begins Quietly Amid Requests To Avoid Trips. Governors of prefectures hit hard by a recent surge in infections, including Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike, have requested residents to refrain from traveling across prefectural borders, as they fear the move of people could spread the virus further.
08/03 - From NHK News - Full-fledged Antigen Testing Starts At Narita. The quarantine station had been conducting nostril-swabbing tests for those who returned to Japan. Such PCR tests took at least six hours before the results became available. But the saliva-based tests take about two hours to get the results back. This would enable passengers to wait for the results while staying in the airport, and return home if they test negative. (14 Day Quarantine Is Still Required For All Arrivals To Japan.)
08/03 - From NHK News - Japan Mulls New Measures Ahead Of Holidays. The government plans to convene an expert panel in the coming days to come up with further anti-virus measures. It comes as the clock ticks down to the summer vacation period that starts next week. Normally that's the time when many people return to their hometowns. But this time, Tokyo's Governor is calling on residents to stay home as much as possible.

MONTHLY SUMMARY

July 2020 Summary
June 2020 Summary
May 2020 Summary
April 2020 Summary

2020.07.26 15:14 finnagains The Wages of Woke - How Robin DiAngelo got rich peddling 'white fragility' - Charles Fain Lehman (Washington Free Beacon) 25 July 2020

Dr. Robin DiAngelo, the bestselling author of White Fragility, claims to believe in accountability. DiAngelo used to list the "racial justice" organizations she donates to as part of her extensive "accountability statement," including a monthly "land rent" paid to the Native American tribe that used to occupy Seattle.
But when the Washington Free Beacon began contacting the organizations she listed as recipients of her largesse, DiAngelo scrubbed the site, removing their names and the dates of her giving from the public domain—a version of the page remains available through the Internet Archive after briefly being unavailable due to what the site said were technical issues. The page was edited again as recently as Friday, when DiAngelo wrote she would begin donating 15 percent of her after-tax income, "in cash and in-kind donations," starting next month—suggesting she had not previously, as the page exhorts, given a percentage of her income large enough that she could "feel it."
This about-face is odd for a woman who has made her career demanding white people not respond defensively in hard conversations. DiAngelo vaulted to superstardom upon the 2018 publication of her book, White Fragility, which argues that all whites are racist and any rejection of that fact is only further evidence of it. To address racism, DiAngelo argues, requires the sort of anti-bias instruction she is selling.
The nationwide racial outcry that has followed the killing of George Floyd has supercharged the Diversity and Inclusion industry, and DiAngelo may be its greatest success story. While she has likely made over $2 million from her book, the speaking circuit is where she is cleaning up. One of the speakers bureaus that represents her told the Free Beacon that a 60-90 minute keynote would run $30,000, a two-hour workshop $35,000, and a half-day event $40,000.
Even before the George Floyd protests reinvigorated demand for so-called anti-racist instruction, the New Yorker had dubbed DiAngelo "the country’s most visible expert in anti-bias training." But the eye-popping numbers underscore how she has turned her academic theories about white racism into a multimillion-dollar empire of anti-imperialism. She owns three homes and is an international jetsetter.
DiAngelo did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this article.
DiAngelo’s clients, according to her website, range from Amazon and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Unilever and the YMCA. DiAngelo reportedly charges up to $15,000 per session—a March 2019 appearance, for example, cost the University of Kentucky $12,000, as well as a $5-a-minute phone-call fee. Recent virtual events run up to $175 a ticket. The eight to ten private events DiAngelo says she speaks at each month likely net her at least $1.5 million annually.
Her book, which made the New York Times bestseller list in its first week and currently occupies the number-two slot, has only added to her success. DiAngelo's publisher said it has sold 1.6 million copies, one million this year alone. Given a conservative 8 percent in royalties, that would mean the book has made DiAngelo over $2 million.
Such lucrative gigs put the white DiAngelo on par with several prominent black commentators on race. Boston University's Ibram X. Kendi, whose book has jockeyed with DiAngelo's on the bestseller list, charges $150 for tickets to public events and $25,000 for a one-hour presentation, his representatives told the Free Beacon. Former Atlantic writer Ta-Nehisi Coates has charged between $30,000 and $40,000 for public lectures.
DiAngelo has presented herself as a classic American rags-to-riches story, offering vivid details of a childhood spent in profound poverty. Those details are not always consistent—in a 2006 paper, for example, DiAngelo claims she "left home as a teenager and struggled to survive," seeing "no path out of poverty other than education." But in a recent New York Times interview, DiAngelo claimed to have run away from home but says she "didn’t get far," and she didn’t enroll in college until she was in her mid-30s. Neither of DiAngelo’s sisters responded to requests for comment.
Her path out of poverty did come through education: a B.A. from Seattle University, then an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. The latter was collected under the tutelage of Professor James A. Banks, the "father" of multicultural education, and earned for a 300-page thesis on the "master discourses" of whiteness.
By the time DiAngelo landed an associate professorship at Westfield State University, outside of Springfield, Mass., she was entrenched in anti-bias training. As early as 2007, she co-taught a class with Darlene Flynn, a leading figure in Seattle's social justice community.
She may have seen opportunity in a growing industry. The Diversity and Inclusion business was thought to be worth $8 billion as of 2003; by 2005, 65 percent of big companies offered diversity training.
Demand has risen since, and she has reaped the benefits. Public records indicate she owns three homes, all bought before White Fragility was published: a four-bedroom bungalow and half of a duplex in Seattle (her daughter, nearing 40, occupies the latter), and a cabin in rural Washington, where DiAngelo and husband Jason Toews relax with friends who, at least on Toews's Instagram, appear to be exclusively white. Tax assessments put DiAngelo's cumulative housing wealth at roughly $1.6 million, in the vicinity of Coates's $2 million Brooklyn brownstone.
In the past three years, DiAngelo and Toews, who as of last September served as DiAngelo’s administrative assistant, have backpacked through Thailand, visited Romania, and toured South Africa.
DiAngelo’s wealth is jarring in part because of her criticisms of white privilege. It is also surprising given that available evidence suggests the anti-bias training she peddles does not work.
A review of nearly 1,000 studies of anti-bias tools found little evidence that they have any impact. In fact, recent studies suggest anti-bias training's primary effect may be to encourage discrimination: Firms with diversity training end up with fewer minorities in management, and field research finds that training both reinforces stereotypes and increases animosity against minority groups.
But DiAngelo’s concept of "white fragility" offers an answer to that academic evidence: The negative responses whites express when told they’re racist are simply evidence that they lack "racial stamina"—and indicate that more $40,000 anti-bias sessions are necessary.
Her advice to white people looking to "shift their thinking and alter their actions" is to engage in more self-education, particularly of the sort she sells. Doing so, she told NPR, "will be lifelong"—an effective way for an already wealthy woman to keep her clientele.
This sales pitch is working. White Fragility tops reading lists from corporations and prestigious universities. Reading groups from Washington, D.C., to South Euclid, Ohio, are discussing it. And the proceeds all flow to a woman who has made a career arguing that white people like her are inescapably, intolerably privileged—an injustice you can only remedy by buying her book.

2020.07.26 15:13 finnagains The Wages of Woke - How Robin DiAngelo got rich peddling 'white fragility' - Charles Fain Lehman (Washington Free Beacon) 25 July 2020

2020.07.21 19:42 ezlezl Tap water SEO site: 11 months - Not much action, but traffic pushing 1000/day

Whelp, almost a year and I feel a bit of pressure to be doing better than this now that it's almost a year in.
This month's will be quite short, as I haven't done very much.
For those of you seeing this for the first time, I made a site is intended to answer the question:

"Can you drink the tap water in ?"

I came up with the idea when I was traveling and while I was in an Airbnb in Thailand, I typed Can you drink the tap water in Bangkok? into Google.

Goal

I think this may be the first time I'm saying it this explicitly, but my goal is to be the #1 or #2 search result for that query for every city in the world.

Last Month In A Nutshell

Traffic chart:
https://i.imgur.com/9hksrom.png
As you can see here, traffic was climbing up until mid march, then took a hit due to covid, then has been steadily climbing back up. In truth, very little meaningful change has happened since May, but just having a much wider surface area and increased page/domain age is probably what is causing the lift.

Dang It, u/ezlezl, Get To Work!!!

Well, to be honest, as I look back, I'm not sure that anything actually got done on the site at all in the last 30 days.
The only real item I put on my to do list was to make my map movable recommended by redditor (u/Imgoingtowingit) in the comments last month.
I don't know that it would have a meaningful SEO impact, but I thought: "sure why the hell not!?" so I added it to my task queue for my team to execute. It didn't get done though, which makes me realize I've done a poor job with following up on my system for getting things done.
I'm told "do nothing" is not the recipe for world domination, but ... well, you win some, you lose some.
Luckily for me, the site did do one thing, which is it got one month older! And since age helps with ranking, the site still did 35% lift in traffic.
However, I DO want to win, so this is a wake up call for me to get my act together and do some stuff next month. Which leads to...

My Plans For Next Month

Well, last month wasn't great, so if I do twice as much this month does that make up? I think that's how it works. Someone told me that if you don't feed a dog for a month, then feed it twice as much the next month, it doesn't always just average out. (Please don't try this at home)
My lofty aspirations for the next month:

End Split Test: "handwritten vs programmatic"

Just following up on an experiment I previously described.
I had previously wanted to test the impact of hand writing content vs using purely generated/templated/scraped/compiled content.
The reason I did this was because I did an audit of the top performing pages on the site and found that out of the top 10 pages by traffic, ALL 10 were handwritten pages.
So a bit of site history - when I created the site, we first handwrote 80 cities. These were 80 well known, large cities around the world.
We later compiled data from the WHO, CDC, and other sources, and created templated pages.
Consequently, there were several important differences between the first 80 pages and subsequent 3000 or so. The first 80 were:
  1. large population centers with high brand recognition (probably most searched, most visited, most tourists)
  2. the OLDEST pages on our site
  3. handwritten
All of these could contribute to the fact that they were our top 10 performing pages on the site.
In order to separate out the effects of being handwritten by us vs programmatically generated, we ran a test.
  1. Of the non-handwritten pages on our site (about 2900), choose 30 cities with relatively meaningfully sized populations.
  2. Order them by population (highest to lowest)
  3. Go straight down the list and alternate assigning them to category A or category B
  4. For the 15 cities in category A, add additional handwritten content in the same way that we did for the first 80 pages we created.
This would effectively create a test group and a control group with:
  1. approximately equal population sized cities
  2. exact same total age
  3. with one major difference -- A was handwritten, B was purely templated/computer generated
Then, we would record the traffic of each group to see if meaningful differences emerged in their organic search traffic.
Now, 10 weeks later, there is no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups.
What I might have expected to see was that the handwritten portfolio would start increasing relative to the templated page. The templated page was useful to maintain as a control because it would be possible for the entire site to start performing better over the course of the experiment, so I wanted to be able to subtract out the effects of the site performing better due to age.
In a sense, this is really good news -- If I had found a significant difference between handwriting and programmatically generated pages, I would have to evaluate whether I am willing to do the work of handwriting thousands of pages to maximize my SEO value. Since that doesn't seem to make a difference (for the level of handwriting we did), there's no incentive to even consider it.
Just for a sense of size, some of the cities in this experiment were: Phuket, Agra, Denpasar, Cancun, Madrid, Beijing, Jerusalem, Rome, Mecca, Osaka, Chennai, Orlando, Munich, Lisbo. I consider these to be reasonably sized cities with broad recognition, travel interest, and search volume -- therefore, if the handwriting component were to create a meaningful difference, I would have expected to see it.
For now, I'm killing this experiment (meaning I'm just going to stop looking at the data). I may revisit it in a few months to see if the traffic volume diverged, but I don't expect it to.

My lofty aspirations for the next month:
  • new design - My site is pretty ugly. It's not awful, but it looks like it was designed by a child. That child was me. I think it's ready for a treatment to look like a truly reliable, trusted source. I'd like to take design inspiration from IQ Air -- here's their page for Bangkok, which I think looks light, clean, and trustworthy. I started working with a new designer recently, Alison, and I'm excited for here to give it a fresh new look.
  • interactive/draggable/scalable map - per redditor u/Imgoingtowingit's comment. Why not? Can't hurt and I have an unreasonable attachment to fixing the *process* for executing things, so this is as good a task as any
  • experiment to improve either bounce rate or time on page - this is a maybe, but I saw a post about a UX experiment to increase time on page run by u/salilsethi. I'd like to think of something I can do to try to improve either: (A) time on page or (B) bounce rate. I'm not sure what a good experiment would be, so would love recommendations from any redditors who actually read this annoying book of an update I write every month. 😇
  • start monetization - I've written about and been asked about monetization a few times and I try to always respond (example, example, example). I've been telling myself I wouldn't bother with monetization until there were meaningful traffic levels. In the last week (outside the measurement period listed above in my stats), the site has been near 1000 organic sessions a day. While that's not a ton, and my original target was 50k/month, 1000/day is 30k/mo and that's close enough. So this month I'd like to consider throwing some adsense and affiliate to amazon water filters. Later I'd like to also try Airbnb's affiliate program for people who may be traveling to these destinations
  • get more sources - I believe that one of the winning moves here is to collect data at scale that can be mapped out to ALL the pages and provide value. Effectively, act as an aggregator of useful information about a particular city. That also gives a wider variety of keywords that google can index for a particular page. This month I want to line up some more sources to extract data from and insert into our site.

Spouse deploys in January, and one of his NCOs told him the divorce couldn't be finalized while he's deployed. Thing is he already signed everything, and the court hearing is supposedly just for me to go for 15 minutes to finalize it, spouse isn't really needed for anything else at this point. Is this true at all? I called the office but they'd need me to come in to answer the question so I figured I'd give it a shot here first.

Anyone been at USAREC as staff? I had an opportunity find its way into my inbox and wanted to see if it is as awful as it sounds.

If I wanted to become an officer in the US army and have a 4-year degree, do I just have to get accepted to the OCS and do its 12 week course, and then I'll get commissioned as a second lieutenant? It almost sounds too good to be true, that I'd go from civilian to commissioned 2nd lieutenant in 3 months, am I missing something?

I was thinking of dropping a Civil Affairs packet. I’m assuming I’ll need my COs approval. Do company commanders usually sign off on stuff like this? I feel like my unit would never let me go.

I want to enlist as an e4 with my degree instead of commission. My only question is how uncommon is this? Money and QOL don't attack I want to be a soldier and excel at being an NCO one day and then potentially as an officer.

I am planning on enlisting in the Army after I graduate from college with an option 40. Is it possible to keep people from knowing what I've done? I've been telling friends and family that I'm going to spend a year in a Buddist temple in Thailand. What steps would I need to take to ensure that my cover is not blown?

Is 17C for people for already have certifications, college, etc. Or can you just qualify through asvab score. Yes I have already tried googling this

I'm taking the ASVAB on Monday at MEPS and was wondering if anyone has any advice? I started as of today using March2success to study. But the last time I took the ASVAB was on paper at my high school and it was quite difficult (I scored a 36.) Is the ASVAB easier on the computer?

Just for clarification: I took the paper ASVAB last year (11th grade. Now a senior.

Haven’t been able to find an Aussie equivalent to this page, so I’m just gonna ask here and hope for the best. I’m interested in studying at the royal military college and joining the 4th regiment as an artillery officer. Was interested in what the process is like and what it’s like actually serving as an officer.

I will not have the option to go home between basic and AIT but would definitely love to have the luxury of my iPad for movies and reading at AIT. Im thinking about bringing it with me to basic because of this. I don't want to risk having my family post it to me. Is this a good idea? Ive been told it will remain locked in the DS's office in my backpack which I am definitely okay with.

Hey, I know this has been asked a million times, but whatever.
I was on antidepressants for a year, have now been stopped for a year. Recruiter telling me to mark it as no. Cousin in army telling me to mark no. Is false enlistment even really a big deal? 13b fyi

I'll keep it short.
I'm 26, will graduate with my bachelors next year at 27. I'm considering joining up as I've always wanted to and I miss the rush of EMS work while also really not enjoying cubicle life (I work in corporate accounting).
My friend of more than a decade joined when we were younger. Went infantry, volunteered for RASP at basic or wherever you do that, and spent his 5 years at Ft. Lewis. He's been out for a few years now. The stories he's told me are absolutely fucking wild. Would never say shit while he was in, though. I'd like to take a similar path, if possible.
Anyway, I'm in solid shape. I grew up an athlete and continued lifting weights after my (pretty successful) little career in hockey came to an end. I've taken a look at the PT tests and tried them out and it's all fairly easy. I am a bit bigger at 5'10" 210lbs, not fat though. Curious to know if any of you bigger guys have had stamina issues during long rucks.
Anyway, I'm just looking for some anecdotes, any idea of how often guys are deploying (I understand there's a chance I'll wash out and end up infantry), info about recent bonuses, money if I were to marry my gf prior, what to expect, etc. I've talked to my colleges recruiter briefly, but I'd like some real time info from guys actually in. The MOS megathreads were good as well, but I need more.
Thanks for anything you guys have for me. I'm open to all positives and negatives.

What’s up everyone. I checked around and looked for a newbie type thread and didn’t really see one. I’ve already searched this sub as well but I can’t really seem to get a straight forward answer. I’m currently AD AF. My contract ends mid next year and I’m considering going Army National Guard. The reason being is that i really want to do MEDEVAC on the HH-60’s. I’m currently an E-4 AF medic. I will be putting on E-5 a couple months before my contract is up. So now the questions
  1. Is medevac really only a 4 week course at ft Rucker? Or is that some other course. I want to actually do Evac and it seems a little short to learn critical care on a helicopter.
  2. BCT? It looks like I’ll only need to do a 4 week crash course. Is this true? Has this changed?
  3. National guard. Do they actually get to do Evac stuff or is it all CBT’s and shit?
  4. Is school still easy to balance while in the Army NG?
Anybody else have anything to add or advice? Thanks in advance. Also if there’s somewhere else I should post this I’m more than happy to move it.

New recruit here. I just finished all my paperwork with 10,000 references. Got all my docs lined up. Scored 93 on PICAT. Got it verified. I chose CBRN because I have a real fascination with World War One and the chemical weapons used. Supposed to go out to Leonard Wood. Any words of wisdom?

Just graduated with my bachelors (26 years old) in Criminal Justice and looking to join the army.
I was wondering if I can become an officer in the army and if I do, does that limit the career opportunities that you can take? How difficult is it to become an officer in the army? I was taking a look at some of the requirements for certain MOS and I was kind of confused on this (for example, was looking at welding).
I was hoping I can receive some guidance for some MOS that is transition-able from the military to civilian life as well as decent pay upon completion of military service. I do not have anything specific in mind although I have browsed some of the threads and Googled around a bit.
Also, how difficult is the ASVAB exam? In the event that I score poorly, would I be allowed to take it again? Is there a limit?

AMTD Group, AMTD Digital (collectively “AMTD”) and GlobalLinker signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement today. The virtual signing ceremony was witnessed by Sopnendu Mohanty, Chief FinTech Officer, and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The strategic partnership aims at providing comprehensive solutions to enable and empower SMEs to help the long-term development and competitiveness of SMEs, including by contributing to the Business Sans Borders (BSB) initiative under the framework set by the MAS.
AMTD has built a multi-dimensional and cross-sector SpiderNet ecosystem that is continuously expanding to connect and promote collaboration between its partners, including shareholders, clients, government bodies, and industry associations, etc. GlobalLinker, through its unique solution for global business networking for SMEs & Startups, is creating a global community of Small & Medium Enterprises and is committed to making SME businesses simpler, more profitable and enjoyable. GlobalLinker is one of the technology partners of the MAS’ BSB initiative.
Together, AMTD and GlobalLinker will endeavor to add to this growing SME community and contribute to BSB’s AI-driven global solutions hub to foster SME digitalization. BSB is established by the MAS, and is a “meta-hub” or connector of several SME-centric platforms. By connecting these different platforms, BSB helps SMEs to access a much larger ecosystem of buyers, sellers, logistics service providers, financing, and digital solution providers more seamlessly. BSB utilises artificial intelligence (AI) to enable SMEs to discover prices and sales opportunities in a larger global marketplace, access various supply chains, and easily source and utilise relevant digital and financial solutions. In late 2019, MAS announced the successful completion of the BSB Phase One Proof-of- Concept (POC).
GlobalLinker will officially join and become a permanent and core member of the AMTD SpiderNet ecosystem, while AMTD will join GlobalLinker’s SME network. The two parties will work together to facilitate the digitalization of SMEs in Asia, help accelerate their global expansion, with Singapore as the strategic hub to showcase the power of the partnership. Through its proprietary SpiderNet ecosystem, AMTD will connect SMEs on GlobalLinker’s platform to AMTD’s global resources and network.
AMTD will become the preferred financial services partner of GlobalLinker, as well as for SMEs on GlobalLinker’s platform. AMTD will bring its ecosystem partners and subsidiaries such as but not limited to AMTD Digital, AMTD International, AMTD Risk Solutions, PolicyPal, CapBridge, FOMO Pay, Airstar Bank (one of the 8 virtual banks in Hong Kong, a joint-venture between AMTD and Xiaomi Corporation) and Singa Bank (subject to the approval of MAS for a digital wholesale bank license whereby AMTD is the lead and largest shareholder), to empower GlobalLinker and SMEs on the GlobalLinker platform.
Mr. Calvin Choi, AMTDs Chairman and CEO comments, “The strategic partnership between AMTD and GlobalLinker would leverage on AMTD’s strong foundation in the Greater Bay Area and connectivity with the global markets, and further enable SMEs to connect outside of Southeast Asia. AMTD Digital and our ecosystem partners’ one-stop digital offering will help SMEs to accelerate their
Digitalization, provide them with full lifecycle solutions, empower their globalization, and contribute to Business Sans Borders.”

This combined power will allow us both to better serve the business growth ambitions of SMEs, who are undoubtedly, the pillars of every economy.”
Mr. Mohanty, extended his congratulations to AMTD and GlobalLinker. He said that BSB aims to ignite a sea change in the way SMEs around the world can easily connect digitally with each other. He welcomes AMTD and GlobalLinker’s persistent efforts to empower SMEs and look forward to see the strategic alliance to contribute to the Phase Two Pilot of BSB, starting first in Singapore, to assist SMEs in their real transactions.
